Don't be hasty when reading posts, take your time. Here is the possible risk/drawback: "To counter this advantage are sockets and links. If you want to re-socket or re-link that item, quality is lost"

The statement still stands, I read that part, don't just assume people don't read before responding, thats really annoying, especially because you've done it twice now.

It still has the same faults, a fully linked 3-4 socket item with colors is basically set, I guess in the long term GGG does change things that would make that item less "good" going forward, but for the short term picture the benefit would mean always doing it.

Take those boots for example, I don't play perm hardcore at all, when I want to test a build, I test it with many of my standard characters, because I have more there and its honestly easier to get access to the things I want. Honestly I don't need anything in those boots at all, given my current build because I'm really not short on links, I might actually chrome them for an animate guardian setup (my character is quad curse) and I'm thinking about not being conduit anymore which means I can easily dedicate the whole 4 link to the setup. However getting extra evasion with the downside of I cant change the links, which its already linked or the colors, which I wouldn't need to isn't a downside at all.

Your idea is the definition of power creep, it doesn't really even add anything interesting either, quality is a rather boring mechanic and serves little purpose then "ima make this item slightly better by putting some of these XX on it".

You still missed the point... :)
Don't know how else I can explain it. Well, imagine it worked like this:
> You get a new item
> Item has higher quality than 20%
> Item has random number of sockets/links
> It can have 1 socket, 3 sockets, 6 socket, 0 links, 5 links etc.
> If you weren't lucky enough to get 5 links, 6 links or even 4 links when initially obtaining the item then you can:
a) Keep item with higher quality but with only few or zero links (depend on what you've got);
b) change the number of sockets/links, but lose the quality.

Or

> You alter the existing item you already have
> It could be done via new higher tier currency orb, corruption, maybe putting it on some sort of altar or anything else
> It can improve or randomly change your item quality between 0% - 40% for example
> It has a slight chance to change item links or sockets (for the drawback)

These are just plain examples of how it could work, its a subject that can change.

I thought this was more about adding a way to improve an item, rather then it just be a in the wild type thing.

The interesting thing would be interaction with masters, if you could bypass the quality consumption by just doing it that way, because currently you can (at least I think so)

Regardless, the effort, which I have no idea how much it would take to change the maximum quality of things and the consideration to balance must be kept in play, guess I'm not as opposed to the idea but I still think it lacks any real dept to warrant adding to the game.
