Dot (damage over time) and critical hit
Hi fellow exiles!
I have Essence Drain/Contagion character I am playing. I have some questions regarding DoT damage. Damage from DoTs are calculated from the initial hit. So, does that mean that if I critically hit with my Essence drain skill that the DoT damage will scale upwards? And also, do the DoT ticks themsleves critically hit? Thanks for your time. Ps. No, that would happen only if DoT is based on initial hit, like ignite, bleed or poison.
DoTs don't hit so they don't critically hit either, they also have no ticks, it's a degen effect. Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

If a skill clearly states that it deals X damage over y seconds, then that DoT is not affected by the damage of the initial hit. And like raics said, those are degen effects and not 'hits'. So they can't crit.

Okey, so I've been ingame again.
When I insert a lvl 19 LMP into a linked socket with essence drain the tooltip changes its damage values. LMP states that it reduces 16% of projectile damage (at lvl 19, no quality). But both damage components change and the DoT component (deals x chaos damage per second) shouldn't, right? I am not arguing that you are wrong. I just want to understand, thanks. |

" It should, Essence drain is a projectile and DoT delivered via a projectile will also be affected by projectile damage bonuses. It's the rule of delivery method, damage over time will inherit damage delivery properties from the effect that inflicted them, usually 'projectile', 'AoE' or even both, though there are a few exceptions to this. Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

I was a bit confused about what properties governs the DoT damage scaling. I think its clearer now. Or getting there!
So. I am thinking that Faster Projectiles skill gem should be really good. It has "x increased projectile damage". In my case my lvl 16 gem with no quality has 27% increased projectile damage. And still, when I link it with ED it does not scale up accordingly. Linking the LMP I saw a 16% decrease. My ED does 4883,6 chaos damage per second. With LMP I get 4201,3. (16% less is 4201,224) With Faster Projectiles I get 5080,2 chaos damage per second. I was expection somewhere in the 6200s. So it scales downwards but not upwards? |

Increased and Reduced Damage is additive - More and Less Damage is multiplicative.
You probably have a couple hundred Increased Damage from various sources, most notably the Passive tree. Faster Projectiles simply stacks on top of that multiplier, whereas LMP (and Slower Projectiles) will act as an entirely separate multiplier. |
