Arc build - Witch vs Templar and why?
Thoughts?
For a beginner looking for lategame potential and FUN |

Standard Disclaimer: "Classes are flexible, start with whatever feels right to you, yadda yadda yap..."
The Witch, generally, has a higher damage start and better access to damage and crit chance (though Arc itself is kind of a bad crit skill, with only a 5% base crit chance). The Templar has access to buttpiles of armor (generally held to be the best/most reliable defense, especially in Hardcore) and also a lot of life regeneration. If I were looking to build an Arc character with late-game potential and do it on a fresh start/clean account/Rookie Budget (or whatever else you want to call it), I'd probably go with Templar myself. The extra life regen and the up-armoring you can get from the Templar start will be more forgiving of play errors, the Heart of Thunder/Breath of Lightning wheel's not too far away if you want to head north for moardeeps. Maybe something like this, as a basic start idea:

54 points, which is kinda mid-gamey but should be fairly easily doable by A2C (Act 2 Cruel). Gives you more than double your gear's normal armor rating, 4.8% standing life regen, 5% lightning penetration, a bunch of lightning/elemental damage, and stuff. Not nearly as much raw life as most folks around here might recommend, but you get options. You can dig deeper into the Witch area for more damage or some juicy flask effect, head south towards Marauder for more armor/life, duck over to the Scion life wheel for a big chunk of life if you find yourself in need, or otherwise go wherever you need to get what you feel you're lacking. Hopefully that helps. She/Her

" That's awesome, thanks for taking the time to give all that info! So, noob question coming up : If there's a great guide for an Arc build on a Witch, I could follow it as a Templar and obviously adjust for the Templar starting nodes? Basically what I'm asking, is the build will be the same except for the skill tree? Loving learning stuff about this game, but it's certainly alot more challenging than D3! |

It would depend on the Witch guide in question. If that guide meanders down into Templar territory then yes, you could likely do it from a Templar start without much issue. Most guides will mention any other classes they can start with.
That said, if you’ve found a guide you like the flavor of, I’d follow it fairly closely to start with. Nobody likes blindly following a build guide, but it’s the best way to not screw up your first character beyond recover. Well, that and I’m fairly sure most Arc builds will start at Witch and go east (this forum is, generally, obsessed with critical strike builds and will try to crit with everything, which sucks for budget players because crit gear is expensive as sin), with the exception of Totem builds. Dual Arc totems are a fairly typical ‘safe’ build to run, and if you enjoy watching fancy tree stumps slaughter your enemies it’s a great way to ensure you don’t die very often, but dual Totem is kind of a rotten build to learn the game on. I’m by no means an expert on Path, but I can probably answer most basic-knowledge questions for you. And anything I can’t answer I’ll want to find out myself, so hey! Let’s see how this goes. She/Her

You can also check ZiggyD's Arc guide for Talisman league: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgtikBRDEzM

" Witch? No! Templar? No! Marauder? YES! My tree: Joke aside you can do arc with templar, witch or marauder. The difference is REALLY small! German saying: Schönheit und Funktionalität in Sekundenschnelle zu ruinieren, ist dem wahren Dilettanten keine Herausforderung!

I went scion because I'm hipster.
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

Ahh…yeah, disregard my proto-tree for the most part. I’d completely spaced Iron Will.
Ziggy’s Iron Will build would be an excellent start, though as he mentions via note, the Blasphemy gem isn’t nearly as useful as the video initially makes it out to be. Honestly, I’ve always preferred the ol’ Foxtactics-style Curse on Hit with a secondary Arc for applying curses with Arc. Zorch a pack with a shot of the curse lightning, then hammer them with damage lightning. The leech from those first five (seven) enemies you slaughterize will last you through murdering the rest of the pack, and if you find yourself running low, just tap off another curse-Arc. Also lets you keep your distance and control your positioning better than a point-blank curse set-up can manage, which can be helpful for position-sensitive bosses. Or, y’know, the whole Emperor’s Labyrinth thing we’ll be dealing with in a few months. But yeah. Arc > Curse on Hit > Warlord’s Mark > (secondary curse of choice) fits neatly on a 4-link and leaves your reservations open to do other stuff with, or to go Mind Over Matter/Clear Mind if you decide reservations aren’t to your liking. ‘Course, that’s nitpicking. The basic idea of Controlled Destruction/Iron Will on a Templar Arc start is…honestly something I might do to replace my ailing Arc Witch. Crit Arc stinks, and I’m sorry I ever tried to do it. Cool, cheers guys.
So after talking about the community etc, someone said an arc crit build is kinda boring and said go for a bow build. I know you can't say, so i'll word it like this. If YOU were starting PoE, and wanting a fun build that's also great lategame and can farm Atziri etc - would you choose : a) A witch/templar arc build b) Ranger tornado shot + frenzy build c) Other build! |
