As people have said, it could take anywhere from 300-1000 (or more) fusings to roll 6 links. Even if you get it in 300, that's 150 chaos, which is equal to about 8-10 exalts. That's if you're relatively *lucky*

Always start with the 6L if possible, then craft it from there.

yea we answered the 6l question, but i want to know about the colours, the mechainics thread doesnt give exact numbers
chance for a 6l is 0,3% .. so the expected value of orbs is 333.

But on the other side, 1-(1-0,3%)^333 = 63% .. or in other words, a 63% chance to get a 6L with 333 orbs .. i would not try it :)
:D

yeah we know now 6l is rare, please someone answer the chroming question
i had 5G 1B i used 1 chrome and got 2R2G2B
1. Ignore the colors
2. Find the perfect base item
3. Determine its perfect ilvl (for chests it is probably 73 for armour/evasion and 75 for es)
4. Shop that base item at that ilvl (Ideally 6S/5L. 6S alone is good too. If you cannot find it you pick anything). You *can* overpay. Even 2-3 exalted orbs. You will dump a lot of currency into this anyway.
5. Craft it. You want a 101+ life chest with a good resist that you regal.
6. Iterate 5 until you get high defenses as a prefix.
7. Jeweller and Fuse it so it is 6S/5L. I recommend preparing 400 jeweller's and 200 fusings.
8. Chrome it. 1000 chromes should get you any combination you desire. If the combination is not unheard of, you can probably get it with 100-200.

You now have a chest like:

It is good but not perfect. You will have to decide if you go through 1 to 8 again (assume you find another 6S of that exact base item you want, you probably should) - or if you try to 6L the current chest.

If you go through 1-8 again, you can keep whichever one you prefer and sell the other one.

If you decide the chest is good enough to 6L is (I don't think mine is), then wait until you collected 200 Fusings and try to re-fuse it. Stop if you get another 5L or 6L. Iterate this step until you have a 6L. One problem with my chest is that the rare colors are at sockets 5 and 6, so if the 5L group would appear on sockets 1-5 instead of 2-6, I would have to rechrome it or keep fusing.

I think that brute-forcing a 6L should be reserved for rares that drop with the perfect stat, but less than ideal sockets.
If you don't care about the base, go buy one.

If you do care about the base, I am selling 5L glorious plates for 4 exalted orbs, go figure! Not even ilvl72. If you are patient a few months you can buy those too. Right now it is cheaper to brute-force them.

*Edit* The way I suggest is the fastest way to get there. It might take you 10-30 hours of play-time to have the 6S/5L but it won't preserve most your currency. There are other ways that prioritize preserving currency and making great deals.

While your best bet is to start with a 6l (or at the very least a 6s item), if you ARE going to try for a 6l do what kosryvrdrgn said and start with an amazing base item. A near perfect one if you can.
