are they ever going to optimize memory usage?

At 4 gigs of ram (the max this PC will allow), every few zones I change I get mapchunk error crash.

In acts 1 and 2 I can go about 6 zones at most before crashing.
In acts 3 and 4 I can go about 3 at most before having to restart the game and losing current progress in a zone, having to start it over if I didn't manage get WP.

Is there any way they could have a fix for this? I'm guessing it's the game storing info for multiple past zones until it runs out. Some option to ditch the zone memory from the ones other than the last one you left.

I love this game and have supported it since beta, but it's really hard to make progress with it or have fun with it when I'm crashing constantly.

You've tried the suggestions in the Tech forum stickies?

I get an error message and a crash after playing the game for a while.

EOUTOFMEMORY or Unable to Map File or Unable to MapViewOfFile
This usually occurs when your game file runs out of ram, common on PCs with low ram or running 32bit versions of windows. Running the game with Texture Quality set to Medium usually fixes this, though having less than 4gb of ram will cause problems after changing areas a number of times. We will improve the memory recovery system in future.
You can also reduce the rate of these crashes slightly by adding -gc 2 to the end of your Path of Exile shortcut target.

If you are still having frequent crashes, you can turn your Texture Quality down even further by manually editing the production_Config.ini file. You can find this file in your Documents/My Games/Path of Exile folder. If you find the line texture_quality=1 and change the number to 2, you'll reduce the texture quality even further. Note that this may make it much harder to see some enemy spell effects.

yep I did all of that. Turned the texture quality down to 3 or even 4 to get through the final act. Game still crashes too often.

I have 4GB RAM and have basically never crashed in PoE. Might be something else.
Alright then. Pop over to Tech Support forum, and post a thread with this info. Include a DXDIAG paste on pastebin, as well as a list of programs you've got running in the background.

4GB is low for POE, but should still be workable. Unless you're running an integrated GPU or something that shares your RAM for video, then you're probably pretty fucked.

All they do over there is suggest what you have here in the past when I stated this problem and posted dxdiag.

I shut down every program I possibly can with task manager, so only programs necessary to Windows running. There will be about 20% RAM in usage before I launch the game, nothing eating up CPU cycles. I even have a good chunk of hard drive dedicated to virtual memory for extra.

I used to play nonstop as long as I wanted to from closed beta to before Atziri came out with only 2 gigs of ram. Something changed at that point and it was crash city afterwards.

could be your computer dieing? why does it have to be there fault? i see no difference, but then again my computer can run multiple instances witcher 3 max.

I'm not saying its not them. only asking if you have exhausted what it could be on your end since i highly doubt its going to change.

There are thousands of people trying to play games like this with substandard computers who contribute and make small donations and spread the word for POE to other gamers. I don't think minor optimization tweaks to the game to make it playable for more people is unreasonable. All the other major ARPGs play fine for me despite my PC not being the greatest. If they can do it so can POE.

Well, I wouldn't hold out much hope that they're going to improve things to the point where you're going to be able to replicate that experience. With more and more ..ahem.. 'things' being added with every new expansion, it will only get worse. They did the work on desync, but I'm not confident that they'll do the same investment on the engine.

Might be time to explore some options for upgrades? It is the only guaranteed way to get a better experience, sorry :(

And now this is more about you than your problem.

Wonder if that was what you hoped for.

Take this over to tech support and you might just get some useful help. Or stay here and get "discussed".
