Sell gems ?

I just keep quality gems for my FreeCP recipe and vend or don't pick up the others.

It's come back to bite me before though, because I don't have a maurader or duelist (and i finally just built my first templar) so getting some of the gems that are class specific for them was problematic! Watch out for that if you don't have a character of every class all the way through to act 4 yet.

I was going to suggest the same thing:
Consider holding onto a few level 1 CWDT gems, and anything else that you might wish to use with them.

If your space is at a premium simply vending the leveled gem with an orb of regret will get you a lvl 1 gem back.

Additionally, in the same amount of stash tab space that a single lvl 1 gem will take up, you can stack 10 chaos orbs. You should be able to pick up most lvl 1 gems from trade for a couple of Alts or an Alch at worst. Don't fill your stash with stuff you may need some day if you can easily trade for it. Instead, sell everything and fill your stash with currency, it's far more efficient!

Caveat on that statement is of course legacy items, top notch rares and uniques (if you have Veil of the Night in your stash, you deserve a slapping).

I believe it only knocks one level off the gem if you do this, so it could end up costing a lot of regrets to get all the way down to level 1.

Scour orbs knock off one level. Regret orbs bring them all the way down to level 1.
