Map difficulty and experience

Hi,

Does the experience granted running maps depend on the difficulty & mods of the map, or only on the map level? I'm finding it extremely hard to level up past the mid-80's.

I'm mostly running alched maps, that in general should be safe enough (I select a char that is most able to take the damage/difficulty), but every so often I get insta-deathed out of nowhere. It's not the bosses either, it's opening a door or strongbox followed by death in under a second.

Up to now I've been alching low end maps (tier 3-6) to counter the otherwise lousy drops I get, but maybe I am better going for safer blue maps, if those give the same experience?

The last few weeks has felt like 3 tiny steps forward, then one giant leap backwards. Feels like a treadmill, with no progress in either level or gear.

Self found, SC, Standard, variety of chars....

Thanks,
Mal..

Xp per monster is based on area level.

Bigger pack size mean more mobs so more xp per map.

There is mod that increase xp gained but it is only avaiable in:
- "untained paradies" unique map spawned by Zana
- darkshrine mod

is that our enemies are human beings like us. They can only be our enemies in relative terms."

Map mods do not have any intrinsic effect on experience gain. The ones that do are indirect - anything that gives pack size, more magics, more rares.

If you're dying to opening doors or strongboxes, you probably aren't playing cautiously enough. It's hard to say exactly what the issue is without seeing footage, but as a general suggestion have you considered Lightning Warp for getting yourself out of strongbox range or away from a door very easily?
Have you done something awesome with Sire of Shards? PM me and tell me all about it!
Mostly I'm playing pretty cautiously, having been burned a million times, but a second's inattention is all it takes.

I'll have a look at leap slam maybe, but I'm also pretty ham-fisted when I'm in a hurry!

Thanks!
There is experience penalty, if you are many levels above monster level of map. So maybe you should play higher tier maps. Maybe blue, if you can't handle rare ones.

If you want 100%exp, then above lvl80, you should use maps with level difference lower then 8.
For example, if you are lvl84, you should farm in areas with monster level 74+ (starting from maps with tier 7). 10lvl difference is also nice, then you got 91% exp.

Here is link, where you can get precise values of exp penalty http://pathofexilebuilds.com/exppenaltycalc.php

Yeah, I know about the experience penalty. Unfortunately I don't have any higher lever maps. Tons of low level ones, but for all they are worth I might as well swan around Dry Lake.

My highest level chars are 85 & 84, and have been for a looooong time. Just to preserve my sanity I have been leveling up some other chars. I'll let them loose on some low level maps and see how they do.

My number one advice is to stop playing self-found. Look at how rich Russia became after they stopped being isolationist.

If you start trading for good gears and depend on parties for leveling, your characters will never be stuck at level 85. All my level 92 characters are done in only 3 or 4 weeks.

If you insist on playing solo, then playing yellow maps do not matter much. Since you do not get to sell away your orb of alchemy, the only good they do for you is to spend on maps then. Playing blue maps do significantly reduce your map drop even further.
I have a question. Is the base experience that the monsters give higher on higher level maps, or is it just that the penalty for being high level is reduced? I mean, say I'm level 75. I should get no penalty for a map as low as 68 or as high as 82. Does that mean I get the same experience or do high level monsters still give more? If I only cared about leveling gems, am I just as well to do that almost anywhere on merciless?

I play SF because the current interface for trade is horrible. I want to be able to search for an item (poe.trade is OK for that), but then buy the item instantly if it has a buyout. I don't want to be chasing people around and haggling, not worth my time. I have plenty of rares/uniques to sell, they are cluttering my stash to the point where I vendor a unique if it's not very good and I have a few of them. However, I don't want to turn this into a big discussion of the trade system, there's plenty of threads about that that turn into flame wars!

I play Standard because I take a long term view of my chars, the short term 1-3 month leagues, starting from scratch, don't do much for me. It's all over before I have done much.

Regarding movement skills, I tried lightning warp with my squishy summoner/firestorm witch, but a couple of accidents warping into the middle of a crowd I had been targetting with firestorm has put me off! Bad button pushing :)

Leap Slam might work for my WoE/Cleave duelist, testing that now, but it's using my Immortal Call slot at the moment, so will have to rethink things.
