I'd say that the whole act was meant to be a lot more difficult for kiting builds. It is full of narrow areas you can't get out of (except for tp). Hell, I find the second part of Malachai extremely difficult for my ranger, due to the massive amount of stuff I have to avoid in the area (Malachai, zombies, blood piranhas, the weird red circle, chaos spheres, red runes, did I forget anything?) while still dealing damage.

During these shenanigans, though, I found out that, if your instance times out, you have to fight the guardians again in order to fight Malachai. I think this is ridiculous, you've already completed the quest, why should you have to do it again just because your instance is over.


I guess this is because they don't want you to be able to farm Malachai too fast considering the fact that the WP is right next to him. :)
