My Impression On: Death Parade (Anime) (Spoiler Free)

Very original premise. I loved the atmosphere and constant flowing of plot twists and existential subjects. This is the kind of anime I like to watch, but despite being so entertainment for me, I found many flaws that got on the way of my full enjoyment.

At first I got the impression that the whole anime was going to be a composition of stand alone episodes, each one telling their own stories, but following a plot line in the universe in which the events occurs; that was not the case at all, but it didn't prevent me from liking it overall.

What I liked
  • The premise is very unique and clever, but the moral complexity is definitely the strongest point of the plot.
  • The atmosphere in the climatic scenes were intense enough to keep me hooked and looking for more.
  • The plot twists and open-to-interpretation endings kept me grinding my mind after some episodes.
  • The quality of the production is fantastic.

What I disliked
  • The episodes that focused on the main characters were very uninterested in contrast with the "judgement" episodes.
  • I felt the whole anime was very sinusoidal. It starts very strong, but it progressively gets dull as it focuses too much in the main characters with the lack of elements that attracts you to watch it in the first place.
  • I found some contradictions in certain character development and plot holes in the universe.

I liked it very much overall. I would recommend it for someone looking for a moral complex and thought provoking experience about existential matter, if they can get over its narrative veering and inconstant focus of the episodes. Thanks for the ones who recommended it to me: aStrayGami and enveratise.

My rating: 8/10
