Riddle me this (inventory height)

I have been playing this game for quite a long time now and I still do not understand why the inventory is not 6 units high.

Like, an actual human being sat down one day and thought about this and was like 'okay, so most of our items are three units high, and then some are two, and some are four... and our inventory is wider than it is high... and the distribution of drops on a given run is going to vary considerably... so clearly the best height is...

FIVE. YES, FIVE WILL GIVE THE PLAYERS THE SMOOTHEST AND BEST INVENTORY MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE!'

And this person was presumably being paid money to make this decision.

Every time I hear someone talk about GGG's commitment to 'quality of life' I just look at the height of the inventory and I laugh and laugh and laugh.

It's particularly hilarious because you could even keep the inventory's total size the same by going from 5 x 12 to 6 x 10. The literal only effect of the change would be making it much, much easier to fit items together without manually re-arranging the terrible auto-placement.

God knows how many player-hours have cumulatively been spent opening the inventory and moving shit around so you can fit 2-4 more rares in for vendor runs.

You don't sound very appreciative of the mini-game within PoE; Tetris.
6x10 will have the same autosort issues. If your problem is with autosort that is different to the inventory height.

Oh, I picked up a 4x2, and then a 3x3, then a 1x2, then a 2x2. Why is there this weird gap at the bottom, that's not efficient, this is taking up more space than necessary.

Yeah, your 'fix' doesn't do anything
but if you dont flip items when u try and pick them up, your friends cant laugh in your face when they steal them.

^ I think ull find thats not quite as sarcastic a comment as it seems, I feel like thats actually the sort of convo that goes on at ggg.
I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :)

Inventory 5 units high.

This is feature, not bug.

idk, maybe I am weird but I actually think the inventory height is okay at five units.

I am not saying it does not cause any issues - on the contrary. But you have to look at it from a different way than just saying "GGG does not care about QoL improvements".
From GGGs perspective, the inventory should be limiting and should force you to make decisions. It is a factor you have to constantly consider and think about while playing, it enforces communication and party play, chances to be ripped off and to rip others off, but also chances to prove your capabilities as a teamleader or good friend.
A more user-friendly dimensioned inventory would remove the limitations drastically, while an even smaller inventory would make it useless and frustrating. I think it is at kind of a sweet spot currently. Mind you, I am not saying I share this view, but I think this is more or less what GGGs thoughtprocess was when limiting the inventory height to 5 units.

ofc I would like a bigger inventory and I would even welcome the MMO-version where items all take up a single slot, no matter what item it is. But that would be way too casual and comfortable for PoE.

Actually it's an excellent point, and anyone that thinks this suggested change wouldn't help (esp with auto-sort) hasn't thought it through at all. With the current layout, if you pick up a 2x4 item, you end up with 2 hard-to-fill spaces. With a 6x10 layout, you'd end up with a 2x2 spot instead, which is much, much easier to utilize. Or if you're picking up 2x3 items, the current layout limits you to 6 and then you're done, having wasted 40% of the inventory space. With the suggested layout you could pick up 10 of them, utilizing 100% of the space. It's a no-brainer that this is more efficient. It's a solution with no downside, imo, other than possibly having to re-organize and/or re-size the display above the inventory due to the narrower window.
I don't much care if it's 5 or 6. The only - only thing about POE that irks my nerves and I hate is the small inventory size. I wish it had a several tabs so you didn't have to go to town as much.

Yes, OP, 6 * 10 would make far more sense than 5 * 12.

It's a question that has been asked for years; how could the design be so bad when an obvious better dimension was there for the same real estate?

But then if you understand (or just agree anyway) that shopping and handbag management is the foundation of hardcore aRPG gaming, it all makes sense.

Ergo: It's an intentionally bad design.
Casually casual.

Can someone please tell me what a tetris inventory system brings to the table that can't be accomplished with a smaller inventory and 1 slot/item? Besides being a tedious pain in the ass, I mean.
