i have a question. when people come across strong boxes, do you guys try to chance orb them in hopes of scoring their unique counterpart?
In higher maps I roll most boxes with magic or rare mobs just for a small extra chance at map drops. This is not really a concern in lower/mid maps where a trans is about as far as I will go. Carto boxes can be rolled for quantity mods and don't be shy about sinking some currency in high maps. Low/mid maps alting is fine. Gem cutters i alt for quantity mods or support mod for improved chance of the rarer gems. Jewelers I alt for rare item so as to at least add to my chaos/regal recipe pool. Or roll quantity and alch the jewelry. Arcanists I will alch but thats it, don't spend to much currency on a box that only drops currency!

Rule 1: don't craft.
Rule 2: seriously, stop it! Crafting materials are currency to trade.
I'll give you a few tricks, this won't be a full guide, as this takes hours.
Most important vendor recipes:
1. Pick up all Gavels, 4 whetstones for 20q, chance in hope of Mjolnir, vendor with a lowlevel map -> 1 chisel.
2. Full gear set of unid rares with ilvl 60+: 2 chaos (you do not ID rares unless the base looks good!) Reserve one of your stash tabs and ocassionally vendor for 2 chaos.
3. Sell Alteration 2:1 for Jeweller 4:1 for Fusing at Vendors.
That's the only rate they offer that is actually fine.
4. get an even better rate for this at Vorici and Elreon lvl 6.
Mastercraft:
1. Do not craft because you can, use your brain.
Like: do not spend 4 chaos to add life to a shit item, buy one with 70+ life for 1 chaos via poe.trade.
2. Learn prefixes and suffixes (the important ones), so you know what you can add and what not. Helps a lot judging items like...
3. Add cheap resists to jewelry and armor via Elreon and Haku during your level process.
Add expensive resists only for your lategame gear.
4. Use Vorici to force unlikely colors and 4S/4L your items. He's cheaper on average than when you do it without him.
5. Unless desperate, do not pay 1500 fusing for his 6L recipe.
Spend fusings, sell 5L results to other players, buy a new item, start over.
Real Crafting:
1. Again, do not craft because you can, use your brain.
Do not waste crafting materials. Do not yolo Exalted orbs on 1c items in desperate hope to make them better. Not worth it 99.99% of the time.
2. Do not chaos spam in hope for something good. Chances are fucking low.
3. Use Chance orbs in hope of rare uniques, or don't. Doesn't matter too much.
4. Do not craft unless you are rich enough and can take the loss.
You're a pussy when you cry after 2000 wasted fusings. If you can't take it, don't even try.
5. You better be crazy rich to try "serious" crafts. Crafting is fighting RNG, and you'll have to start over again and again once your item bricks.
6. If you ask yourself "Is this item worth to use a Divine/Ex on?", the answer is "no" in 99%.
For a beginner/poor player, I recommend:
1. You may spend your trans/aug/alts during levelling for some gear with life and resists.
2. You may spend some alchs on promising items (like gloves with 4 linked sockets and useful colors).
3. You may recolor your sockets, and link some 4S items.
4. You may 20q your promising items.
5. Stash the rest. Do not use it. Do not even think about using it.
Hope that helped!
Man, your post should be a sticky.
If only I could have read this when I started POE :')
Why do you suggest vendor unid jewelry? That's BS and I would never do that. Even half assed ring/amu can be sold for a couple of chaos and cover your unid reciepe, why do you risk to vendor something particularly valuable?
Jewelry is 99% trash, same as the other items.
If you want to, use the ID recipe, but you're most likely giving up currency.
