I'm currently building a Flame Totem Build as well and while i don't exactly follow the Guide it has been very helpful for me so far.

At the moment i'm kinda at the crossroads and simply don't know which way to go, my survivability is absolutely fine and i don't actually need any more life nodes from the Marauder area but i'm on the fence of going there for the totem nodes near BM.

How strong are those nodes in your opinion? Are they a must have or am i fine skipping them? Would be a climb of 6 skill points taking the shortest route which is quite a considerable amount as far as i am concerned.

I'd save those for later or skip them. Those nodes are not incredibly crucial. Do be sure you are happy with your DPS though.
