Radeon R9 200 series FPS drops unbearable Please help!!!

So I'm no computer genius but I know my specs should be able to handle this game at any settings. However, it seems to really struggle with the lightning particle effects, which are causing huge fps drops and lag. Sometimes it leads to the screen going black and then crashing. I've tried to do some reading to troubleshoot myself but i haven't ran across anything that will help. I just want the game to run smooth and could care less how it visually looks at this point. I want to be able to play HC without this causing my RIP. See screen for example. I've also included my current display settings which I've tried messing around with but still get the same end result. Any help is appreciated. I hope to have this resolved by the time beta goes live.

Double check your power and performance settings.

also keep in mind that just because your PC is able to play "other games" on the highest settings, there are often times many other factors which can affect performance.

One of those factors is the game itself. Most of the "other games" you're likely to compare to are developed by AAA studios with a LOT of money and resources, using well-established game engines that are also developed by other AAA studios and licensed for lots of money.

In contrast is GGG which is an indie developer using their own custom built engine. It's not exactly the most efficient engine, and thus doesn't necessarily work well even on top-end machines.

Finally, in addition to all that, PoE requires a LOT of multiple system resources simultaneously like HDD, CPU, GPU, and RAM.

There's also been some extra optimization issues with AMD specific GPUs. It just takes a lot of tweaking and configuring. Wish I had a more specific answer to provide you instant benefit, but I really don't. Good luck.

Thanks for the input. I double checked power settings and they are set to performance. I understand what you are saying just feel that someone has to know what to tweak to get it to perform better.
theres a couple things you can try but by no means are they any answers. First I would try changing texture settings to medium or lower. Also it sounds counter intuitive but ive had luck rolling back to an old video card driver in the past. Finally, while in game open up task manager and check the percentage of your ram being used...ive had times in the past where 90%+ ram usage would seemingly cause video problems.

These are all stabs in the dark so take them for what they are worth....and thats not much :)
I tried changing the texture settings in the production Config file around and will mess with that further. Keep the feedback coming in!
If you don't mind playing without sound, you can add -ns to your shortcut target which usually improves performance.

It also helps to disable all chats until you need to use them.
I'd like to add on to his initial post here ---

You guys continue to add ideas that affect performance issues. His computer is literally a beast. I hand picked each and every piece and he build it from scratch. At the time of construction (about 12 months ago), it literally had the highest end components available, some of which are still the highest end. Everything is still top of the line.

I'm running an old alienware mobo, an old quad core processor, 16 GB of RAM, lacking a SSD and using a HDD, and a 7970. My PC runs path of exile better than his and literally EVERY part of my computer is archaic in comparison.

There is zero reason this should be happening.

Numerous times, I have seen him crash due to his screen literally just "blacking out" during POE, or him crashing due to severe FPS drops. It's killed characters level 80+ in hardcore.

This has to be a quick fix, we just aren't necessarily sure what is wrong.

The only advice I had was to adjust v-sync, post processing, and antistropic settings, but it changed nothing. More importantly, I run everything at max quality and never get FPS drops except when I open a strongbox (I think everyone does), the occasional "bringer of bones" nemesis mod, and running my Mjolnir discharge/arc combo.

Please continue to add support, we are looking for any solutions possible. There's no reason this should be happening.

The screen blanking and other issues are power related.

That's why I asked to check them.

I don't think the screen blacking out is power related. Its my vid card spazzing out. I've treid rolling back driver numbers but nothing seems to help. I've tried playing at lower resolution which doesn't help. I'm convinced the issue is in the particles and how they are trying to be displayed. What is the texture filtering option in the config file? While i'm up to playing the game with crappy graphics it does seem a bit overkill to play in runescape looking mode.
The problem historically is that the card for some reason becomes under-powered which causes it to not respond properly which causes Windows to reset the driver which causes the card to stutter/lag and possibly cause the screen to blank.

In the majority of cases I've seen, it is either because of bad driver configuration, bad power configuration, or the PSU is not able to properly power the device (also check that the card is directly powered if it needs it).

You'd be surprised how many times people install new video cards and don't realize they have their own power connector that is required from the PSU for it to work properly.
