Low textures

How to activate them
Spoiler
Open the productionconfig.ini. You can find it here: C:\Users\"username"\Documents\My Games\Path of Exile
Search for: texture_quality=0
Now delete the 0 and fill in a 3 instead.
Save the ini. When u start the game dont change the texture quality or it will reset it back to the original.

Performance compared to "high" and "medium" textures
Spoiler
High = 530 fps (+/- 0) (+/- 0%)
Medium = 570 fps (+ 40) (+ 8%)
Low = 680 fps (+ 150) (+ 28%)
Disclaimer: The fps changed from the values in the original test due to using a new test instance.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Increasing performance out of the game with external tricks
Spoiler
Turn down the quality of your AF in your graphics card driver.

Eliminate programmers running in the Background, such as steam for lower CPU usage.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Disabling the sound engine for better performance
Spoiler
Right-click your Path of Exile shortcut, select Properties and then add the option after the Target: "%ProgramFiles%\Grinding Gear Games\Path of Exile\Client.exe"

Add: --nosound
Disabling the sound engine sometimes help alot with stuttering.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Problem solving:

General low fps
Spoiler
Turn of shadows
Turn down Anti aliasing

Memory Problems or spiky fps
Spoiler
Turn off post processing
Turn down Texture quality
Turn down Texture Filtering
Disable the soundengine (A "how to" is shown in the section above)

High fps, but hard fps drops
Spoiler
Limit your fps to 60.
1. Use Vsync (Not optimal)
2. Limit it within the nvidia driver (Nvidia cards)
3. Limit it with "RadeonPro" or "Msi Afterburner" (AMD cards)
Disable the soundengine (A "how to" is shown in the section above)

Good guide.

I was interested how your FPS doubled when turning on post processing? Post processing is an additional graphical effect so it should decrease framerate, if anything. I wonder if this is a bug with the game or an error in your test? How many times did you run these tests? You might also consider testing: Window Fullscreen vs Fullscreen. The biggest problem with framerate in PoE for me is not maximum FPS but rather minimum FPS. I can achieve over 1,000 FPS in PoE but the minimum framerate can dip down to 10 FPS. So I'm not so sure how useful maximum FPS is in determining the overall effect on framerate. Nonetheless, your guide generally holds true as turning down graphical settings should increase framerate.
Turning on post processing increases fps for about 50 for me. I tested it multiple times. The double fps mostly come from the low details.

That's good to know. You might consider including how many times you ran each test in the guide. I really do wonder about post processing. It shouldn't increase framerate at all. There must be some bug with that setting.
I ran each test about 10 times. Yes it may be bugged ill test it again soon.
Nothing new :(
Let me sum up the entire post:

Except post processing, u need to turn that on.

The post shows never players what to turn down if they have fps problems instead of just turning down everything or things that dont cost alot of performance anyway.

Awesome resource aceCrasher! Hopefully this helps anyone experiencing difficulty with Path of Exile. Another tip is you can change some of these settings via the production_config.ini file in My Documents -> My Games -> Path of Exile. For example, the Texture Quality number can be set higher to lower the quality further. It reduces the quality heavily, but if players are stretching their RAM it's a good diagnostic fix.
