New player at level 55 looking for some guidance on gear.

Hello!

I'm new to the game and I'm trying out the -Vaal Pact Dual Claw Build-
https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/852727

I've been doing great up until now where I hit a wall inside the Sceptre of God (cruel). I think the problem is my gear. I've bought some gear on poetrade, and also given some stuff by kind people helping me out. I love this game, but when it comes to gear I feel like an idiot. I just don't understand how to think when gearing my character.

I'm gonna list the things I'm currently sporting and would love it if I got some feedback and guidance on what to do next.

As I'm sure you know I don't have much currency being a new player. 5 Chaos, 1 Exalted, and a heap of lower stuff. :(

Well. Any help is much appreciated as I have next to no understanding of this game.

Thank you!
1. Upgrade your flasks. You have two level 26 flasks at level 55, which greatly hurts your life recovery. You can buy better flasks for wisdom scrolls at the vendor. Also, transmute your quicksilver.

2. Max out your resists and try to get life. On poe.trade, search by slot, and in the explicit mods section search for + max life (50+ or so) and +% total elemental resist (40% or so). The values I gave should result in cheap gear; you can shoot for more life/resists and phys damage/attack speed on your jewelry if you can find something affordable. Or lower the numbers if everything's too expensive.

Make sure to check the boxes for buyout only and online only. Click on a price on the results page to sort by the cheapest items first. I'd upgrade your amulet first, then the chest, then the blackheart, then your other ring in that order of priority. Gloves/boots could also be improved if you can find decent 4l's. Example search for chests, since I suck at explaining: http://poe.trade/search/ikugometonamok

3. Weapons upgrade, especially if you feel that you're not doing enough damage. You can probably find better stuff for a chaos each in standard. http://poe.trade/search/medukitatatano, click on a weapon's pdps to sort by that. I wouldn't spend too much on weapons now since you'll definitely have to upgrade to higher level weapons.

4. I'm not sure if you're actually using anger right now, but hatred should be better for you. Whirling blades should be linked to faster attacks. You want to spam it to move around; your other skills are better for damage. I'm not sure increased critical damage is worth linking to your dual strike right now, since you don't get any crit chance from your tree, and your amulet mostly negates the crit multi anyways (I'd just stay away from crit altogether until you get a bunch of crit from the tree). Maybe use added fire instead.

Hope that helps. Feel free to ask more questions. You can sell your exalt for around 40 chaos atm, but I think it's better to just keep it for later and stick to using your lower currency for now.

theres usually no need in buying gear until late merciless. The exception are gems and sometimes a weapon

cruel Sceptre of God/Dominus is very hard compared to act 1 and most of act 2 merciless so Id suggest to "death-zerg" through or to join one of public parties. Lots of people party up for Sceptre/Dom so it should not be a problem

then continue to City of Sarn. There you can farm a bit and it is usually a phase when I start buying gear

Thx a million to both of you!

I haven't really been using Whirling Blades enough I think, and I sort of got in the mindset of facetanking everything. I'm just doing Sceptre of God right now and using WB more seems to work out a bit better, even though I died once so far.

Faster attacks on WB was a great idea, ty.
Try not using too many uniques. Your armor needs replacement bad, and your amulet is not really worth it too. Cap resistances, get lots of HP on the tree. Try searching for high hp/resist pieces of poe.xyz, and find ones that are cheap (1-5 chaos).

Also, pay attention to bleeding, freeze and maybe stun. (altho, you are using Wanderlust, so freeze is not a problem now... but you're missing hp and resistances from that slot).

Flasks. Get ones that are for you level.

Fix your links - this is the time you should start getting some items, that you will be using for some time which in turn means you should start getting 4-links on your items (on items you won't change any time soon, that is). Fill your slots with skills that you can use and are REALLY important in your build. Skills that you are not sure about go to the weapon switch slot (these gems gain exp, even if you are not using the weapons).

Fill the rest of the remaining sockets with either Vaal Skill Gem setups OR trigger gems.

I have a soft spot for dual claw shadows so add me to your friends and hit me up if you see me on line and I'll find you some gear upgrades.

My usual IGN is Sceaduwe.
ok, first thing I would do is take the exalt, put it in a safe corner of your stash and dont spend it on anything for the moment. Wait till youre in endgame maps and understand a bit more about the items you need, hopefully find another one or two of them and then buy something nice with it, for now, dont touch it, just spend the chaos and other bits cause thats the sort of gear you need.

first up, need to sort out the gems in your reave. Life On hit is nice, but your claws have life on hit, ditch the gem and use multitrike. Your claws have 30 life on hit between them, the gem has 30 life on hit, so it will cut your life on hit in half, but.... it will double your attack speed, which will double the amount of life on hit you get from attacking per second, see what i mean? Double the damage, twice as many hits, same amount of life on hit being triggered. Then id take out added fire and use melee physical damage, so youre reave, melee phys, multistrike, faster attacks.

then id replace the chest, the guide uses carcass, probably still too low level to use that chest atm so just get a rare evasion chest with about 600 evasion, 60 life and some resists, dont spend more than 1 or 2 chaos at most on it. Maybe u can get a freebee off dodgydave, i might have something on standard or maybe something in our guild stash i dunno. Same with the 2 gems you need, dont go begging in global chat but if you let us know when ur online in this thread or whatever im sure one of us can hook you up with something as simple as a few gems and lvl40-50 gear for free.

amulet needs to go, something with life + physical damage would be what u want.
I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :)
I just want to thank everybody here for helping out.
I'm trying to find something decent, but I find this economy system extremely tedious and hard to grasp.
I don't dare to buy anything when I don't know if I'm getting ripped off or not.

Numbers have a way of bouncing off my brain whenever I see them, and all these conversion rates just becomes a fog to me.

Well... I'll be playing tonight and if you guys have something for sale that you might think is good for me, send me a msg. Name's Lypes and I'll probably be running up and down The Ledge in the hopes of getting some currency.

Thx again!

There is no other way to get into the economy, other than starting to sell and buy stuff. After a while you'll get a good grasp how much things might be worth. Don't worry tho - we all have been through this, and we got ripped off a few times ;-).

I'll message you in game when I get back home, I'll give you some guidance and tips on the gear. I also have some stuff you might want - some extra discount for being new might apply too :D.

Good luck there, and don't worry. :)

Something to warn you about. Even after taking all our advices on this game, your build will still have a hard time because this build you have chosen is not very beginner friendly. The guide you copied from involved about 50 exalts worth of gears. That will take you a year or tremendous luck to farm up.
