At what map level should I start alchin' and goin'?
If I can, should I just alch every map I do? Or should I wait for the maps to get to a certain level?

pretty much alch any time you need to drop more maps. i figure 73 maps is around the time to start alching them all.
otherwise if you have plenty of maps already transmute and alt them till you get pack size or magic monsters. if you want to have fun take a tropical island, alch it, then corrupt it. or with any map you prefer. did that one time and i ended up with an 8 mod beyond map. spawned ephij even. was extremely hard for an entry level map but was fun :D |

Hey there, personally I would never alch a map under level 74. Also I only spend chaos orbs on an alched map if it is 76-78. For lower maps I recommend to craft +pack size/monsters on it and you will do fine.

Currently Aching 70+ maps desperately trying to gain a 74+ pool.

Never alch maps.
Alt/Aug until packsize/magic/rare Regal it if 75+, Vaal it if 77. No chisel for <74, 1 chisel for 75. 2 chis for 76, 4 chis for 77, sell 78's. ✮ in-game @FTMFW

Simple check in an established league: go on poe.trade and if map is worth more than 3 chaos, you can alch it.
In a new league, it very much depends on your map base. IGN: Chundaziri 8/8 Ambush/Invasion Complete - 21/06/2014 8/8 Warbands/Tempest Complete - 10/08/2015 Last edited by Chundadragon#1131 on Apr 19, 2015, 4:47:15 AM

It depends on many factors. If you trade, how long into a new league it is, how much do you play (if you play just a few hours a day, Zana dailies will cover a lot of your mapping)...
When building the map pool myself, I try to avoid alching anything below 73 tier, unless realy desperate. When I have already a nice pool, I dont alch anything below 75 and don't chisel anything below 76. If you trade, it depends on current map prices in league. I like the alt/regal method a lot better.

" I have never heard advice so bad. If you vaal a 77+ map _with pack size_ and it loses pack size... your life just sucks. And some of us care about actually reaching high levels. Selling 78s would make the grind that much more painful. |

To me the answer is alch and go when you're having trouble maintaining or progressing your pool but the maps you have aren't worth chiseling(assuming you don't buy maps). In a new league, you might find it worthwhile to alch and go a few 69 maps, but it wouldn't be worth it at all when you have an established pool in the mid to late 70s. I've found alch and go to generally be necessary in order to break out of the low 70s.
Also, if you have a complete sac set and you're willing/able to run it, you can get a bunch of 70/71 maps from it. It's not safe in a hardcore league but in a standard one, it's not a bad way to jumpstart your 70/71 pool. |
