Copying other player's builds...

PoE has a very steep learning curve.

I think it's definitely okay for a newbie to copy a build when they first start, just so they can familiarize themselves with the game. It's no fun dying repeatedly (and possibly quitting) because they have no idea what they're doing.

Now if someone has played for 2+ years and still copies other people's builds on every single character they create, then there might be a problem (but still debatable).

When I made my build guide on the Ranger forums, it was very satisfying seeing new players enjoying their first PoE playthrough using my build. I'm sure many of them have gone on to tweak and/or create their own builds.

The community of PoE is one of its greatest assets. Players helping players. I definitely feel that spirit is what keeps PoE going. Inspire others and be inspired by others.

This build looks copy / pasted though , you smartly organized it and posted it since noone else would lol .

I disagree. Unless you are a 'hardcore' gamer willing to invest many hours/days learning a game before you can actually have *fun* with it, you will not last. If I tell them to go to the forums and start reading, they're going to want to just load up Diablo 3 and have fun right now. Why bother?

If they have no interest in depth and are not interested in learning how things work in the game, then by all means this game is not for them and they should play D3.

Blizzard really went out of their way to guide their players *within* the game, to try and make player's less dependent on outside resources. In their minds, it isn't *fun* to have to look up a build online and copy it. Do you agree with this sentiment?

Honestly after D3 i dont believe a god damn word outta Blizzard's mouth they couldnt even develop a new aged PONG GAME right without screwing something up.
dont have a problem with ppl copycating streamer in fact i milked all those raizqt fanbois who copied the rotp build whats annoying is when you not only copy other ppls build/time/ideas on top of that you refuse to learn the mechanics of the build and ask in forum threads blatantly showing you copied it

this was the case with kripps discharger...tons of copycats without any knowledge of basics

If everyone were forced to make their own build this game would have a lot less players. Most people don't have tens of hours to waste with figuring everything out before finally making a somewhat good character. They try once or twice and if they fail they copy or they quit.
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.
It's all personal preference, OP.

Personally, I haven't even looked at a pre-made build plan, much less copied one. End result is many experiments went wrong along with some really fun & successful top secret creations. For me, that part is where I find my joy playing rpg styled games.

Everyone is different. There's no right or wrong way to play.
I ain't neva copied nobody's build!!

Result being that I may not be the most knowledgable player, but there are a few obscure approaches I have found that work well for me personally, whether it applies to the player base at large who knows.

For example I love them resistance nodes, other players will tell you to skip em. I see Divination Distillate and Astramentis as more valuable than Shav's or Scold's. Well, they are for my style of play. Glad they aren't for others because I can get them for cheap each league.
We were all happy that we got some guidance in the beginning, weren't we?

After some learning we realized that it is all about getting ~150% increased HP + the other special nodes we wanted + DMG.

That said, I am looking forward to 2.0. I hope it shakes things up.
Well, this is why people make builds for others. So they can go out and test it. Back when I was just beginning to play POE, my first character was complete shit, I made a melee marauder but ended up using only one useful skill - which was Searing Bond.
What I mean is - if you are a new player I really recommend using someone's build to learn the game's basics, how things work, the end game's mechanics, etc. It just helps to learn the game faster and deeper. Even now, after 1 years being with POE, I look up at some builds and gather all the information and use all the best advantages of those builds and create my own one based on the builds I liked and changing a few things on the tree/gear here and there. Once you have experienced pretty much everything in the game and want to discover new builds - you are more than welcome to do so.

Hey everyone, what do you think about copying other player's builds? Do you think it is a negative aspect of the design that a player would have to, or want to, copy another player's build? Whether for learning purposes or desire to reach end game content?

I don't think it's a bad thing at all. Imagine a new player only investing a couple hours a day and eventually reaching Lv40, only to realize his build isn't getting him anywhere. Might make him completely quit the game. However, I guess that means it is a negative aspect of the game design. Building in PoE is not intuitive at all.

I very often copy one of Hegemony's build and simply change a few nodes around. He plays HC so his builds are usually to defensive for me.

You make my ochinchin go doki doki.
