Can somone explain this ambiguous item stats question?

I was partying with a buddy of mine the other day and we came across a question that seemed a little unclear as it pertains to item stats and what they are really worth on gear. Consider the following item:

Question: What is the total Energy Shield on this item?
Is it 982 as it is displayed at the top? (IE, stats below describe upper stat)
Is it 982 + 142 = 1124?
Is it (982 + 142) * 170% = 3034.8?

Thanks for the clarification!
Is this a trick question? Its the one you see below the quality stat.
It's 982, the sum of all the local ES affixes and the base ES. Note that it doesn't include the %ES bonus you get from the intelligence affix.

Nicely spotted, but that factors into the int stat first and then into the total ES and has nothing really to do with the items ES but the total char sheet ES.
OK, thanks for the clarification.

So to really dumb it down, if I were solely interested in maximizing energy shield and ignoring every other stat, I would simply refer to the top number (982 in this case), and ignore all other ES descriptors in the lower details (since they are already factored into the 982 number)?

Does that accurately describe it?

Well, the 900+ number is the sum of all the affixes and suffixes below, so if you want to get more than those 900+ you would have to increase those below.

But if you look at the blank ES on an armor, then yes, simplified its the one up top you want to be the highest.

In this ^ case, there is no Q, and no % increased ES and no flat ES, so the only stat that you need to look at is the top one. If i want to increase that however i can alch it and get flat and % ES on it that bumps that number up and i can Q it up so that number increases.
Base Es + flat es + Qual x % ES = ES easy huh?
The es of chest after the +% es and +max es rolls is 982. Intelligence increases your characters overall es but not the es of the item.

At the risk of beating a dead horse...
The item on the left is better than the one of the right even though the affixes and suffixes on the right are higher. Is that correct?

Yes, that's correct.
