ES Gear vs. Hybrid Gear

So looking at the values of the hybrid gear I see while leveling (around lvl 20), the hybrid gear has slightly lower ES but I could also get evasion or armor. Is there any reason to go straight ES gear or just go with the overall best stats?

And if I should go with the best gear overall, how does each point of armor, evasion, and energy shield compare? (Such as 5:2:1)

It all goes down to what defensive passives you get. If you get a lot of ES nodes (which you probably will, since they are the ones close to your starting area), then every point of ES on armors is gonna be a lot better than Evasion or Armor.
Since you can stack more bonus for ES from your starting area than for Evasion or Armor, pure ES armors tend to be a lot better.
Generally, you want to stack one of the defensive stats and life. In the case of a CI Witch, it's just ES, if you go Hybrid, its better to get more Life and life nodes, since life scales harder and is more manageable.

I am still new to this game, but I'm gonna have to question that. i you go for pure ES on all body armor parts with no molten shell or anything, your huge ES pool vanishes in 1 hit. At least that is my experience so far.

I'd say a good mix is the answer. But then again, I'm noob :)

Mitigation is good only if you can get big amounts of it. 20% evasion or 20% physical damage reduction won't save you from much, but having a 4k shield against a 1.5k shield IS gonna make a real difference.
As a Witch, you need big buffers (high life or ES), not constant mitigation. Damage spikes will kill you if you go hybrid armor, compared to full ES.

hybrid armor's pretty bad in general, there's no incentive to wear one(like having base values 20-25% higher or +flat bonus affix will always apply to both).
