Soul Mantle, Spidersilk Robe

Vaal Discipline helps.
My dual Cybil's Paw Flame Totem could tank the near damage of Kole - in the times of 1.2
Two-handed - Mop
Dual Wield - Slippers
One-handed & Shield (close combat) - Brush & Basin
One-handed & Shield (ranged) - Hair Dryer & Mirror
Main-hand & Off-hand (evil witch) - Sponge & Soap

I wonder what Durentis intented for this item?

Sorry.. saw this on my vacation and forgot to respond.

You can probably dig stuff up from my old post history if you haven't already. Don't think I ever posted my original proposal as-is though.

Here's my original proposal
I haven't seen an ES chest unique and totems are a bit harder to reach from the right side of the Skilldrasil, so I'd like to design a unique that covers those in an interesting way. (And people have been asking for a Shaman class, maybe this would serve?)

But much more than that, I'd love a rather chaotic cursed property (defined below) on the item as it's very "me" and I think it would be more than a little amusing. I like the idea of giving someone an awesome bonus but flicking them and their allies periodically for its use. :)

I'm not very good with builds (haven't been here long) so I'm kinda curious what people would do with this.. hopefully not completely break the concept, but perhaps it's late-game enough to be alright.

---------------
Soul Mantle (?) ...or perhaps Chaos Mantle?
---------------
endgame viable-ish ES
….- not sure what range this is, but should be lower than that on higher-level rares.
---------------
Chance for self and allies to take some random damage type every several seconds
+1 Totem
Socketed skills supported by mid-level(/quality?) Totem
(more? spell damage, increased aoe/totem range, faster projectiles, -15 to -20% all resist, …?)
---------------
"Oops?" - <Unknown>.
….- perhaps there's an old evil-ish/crazy(?) character in the story who crafted items long ago and this was a mistake, given the curse? …or was it?
....- I really don't know what to use for flavour text, but this does seem rather fitting.. lol
---------------

Concept points:
- late or endgame ES chest piece
….- haven't seen one yet and it fits well with the right-side totem build
….- usable as early as possible but preferably capable of six sockets
- "curse" self and allies in a fairly large totem-like radius
….- the mantle is essentially a -1 (or hostile) totem centred on the player
….- should be enough damage to be aware of and have to gear or flask for occasionally but neither too deadly nor trivial. Somewhat less than the health drain from bears?
….- should pretty much guarantee an ES recharge interruption occasionally (existing passives to reduce chance by time/delay)
….- say, for a random number example, 50% chance every 3s to deal <damageType-specific range> <damageType> (ie: 1-200 lightning) damage to self and each player in range. Perhaps decrease damage by proximity, where the wearer takes the full and more troublesome amount. (Or it could pick wearer plus a random target more frequently with 100% chance?)
....….- point is to deal damage of all elements, physical, and chaos so the damage is unpredictable, harder to hard-counter in gear, and you can't get 100% immunity to it short of a regen build (but it would still eat into such a build's effectiveness).
….- probably turn effect off in towns just like all skills are disabled, but not necessarily
- enables flexible multi-totem build on right side of Skilldrasil
….- I expect some folk will get three totems, maybe four if they really dig for the distant node depending on start location (..not sure if there are other uniques that increase totems?)
….- the totem support mod allows folk to have one great or multiple viable totems of respectable (not longest) duration on their action bar as they will without the need to level and fit several Totem and accompanying support gems

Graphical appearance:
- tattered silk-like mantle with webbed sleeves
….- jet black with somewhat lighter charcoal highlights
….- perhaps some silken shine, in places, coming through a general worn appearance
- much like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1871_dolman.jpg
….- but moderately distressed and much less bulk beneath the mantle.. perhaps even just shorts/pants.
….- might be of some help w.r.t. texturing/distressing (though it seems to lack the cool sleeves shown above): http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/6348342
- maybe a black version of the Occultist's Vestment in the meantime?

The active troll-ish nature of the curse was understandably set aside. I suggested maybe inflicting party members with a curse (like Vulnerability) as an Aura but there was no tech then for Auras on items and it was still troll-ish. We wanted to keep it complementary with Ancestral Bond and one of Carl or Mike's (?) suggestions was to have "When your totem is killed you teleport to its location" as a mod. I felt that this could be abused, have the drawback too easily mitigated, and strayed from my desire to have the downside based on a some sort of chaotic curse. I pushed the curse idea again with multiple curses in case Vulnerability itself wasn't bad enough - specifically Temporal Chains.

Ultimately, Carl got back to me with "You receive one additional random curse when one of your totems die", which I thought was interesting - brilliant, really. After making sure that "death" included natural expiry and replacement (to prevent abuses and keep the curses coming) I was really happy with it. The final mod reads a bit different, but same idea and more informative.

I somewhat regret it sharing a base type with The Covenant.. don't think I was aware of that at the time. And perhaps a dex or int/dex base would have been better since it fits better with my favoured Acrobatics and playstyle, but no big deal given that the guts of the item are in the lower mods. I also don't like how build enabling items are so hard to come by without trading (I farmed docks for ages before finally giving up and trading for one) rather than dropping around when they become useful, but SFL-like loot mechanics is another discussion.

Still no 3D art for it, unfortunately. Not a high priority item, I guess, though there was some call for it a while back for skin transfers as I recall.

Anyway, there ya go.. no more wondering. Happy Holidays. :)

Somebody from guild linked this:

And i got curious if this is viable in a HC league ^^ Given 1.3 buff to totems

So ive tested if switching your weapons to off hand
to remove the totems will not count as "Totems Die".

Apparently, it is, and you'll get curse stacked if you want too as well XD.

I wonder if there's a way to heal the totems?

1,3 totem buff? What is this? I must have missed this. Can you bring me up to speed?
No way to heal totems. And they have a duration anyway so it's pointless. Shockwave totem has a duration of 8 seconds for example.

When i used soul mantle i brought 4x flasks with curse immunity. The only thing that works.

Thx for the background durentis. Interesting as always.
Thanks for the story on the unique, Durentis.

I think whoever edits the wiki should link each unique to a post/thread about how it came to be if such exists. Always interesting to know this kind of stuff.
Oblivious
I used this on a level 84 Spork for magic find, the tripple totem helped me out a lot in clearing speed, i used double granite with curse immunity and 20 extra charges, had perandus to make them last longer.

Could have perma curse immunity up so the downside wasn't a problem, though haven't touched it since low-life got nerfed.
Are the curses that bothersome, considering you are usually at a distance to the mobs?

Apart from flasks, maybe the use of a Thief's Torment, just for the fact that curses have 50% less effect on you?

The design of Soul Mantle is very interesting, thanks for the background.
I bought a perfect one for 1 chaos, it´s a common build enabling unique and Im using it for my witch in Torment league and some eyebrows are raised when i use it in pvp :)

Just saying undervalued nice piece of Spidersilk.
