How do developers feel about modded player run servers?
Just curious about this and what the developers stance is on modding user created content or player run servers?
Since we have too extremely different contrasts compared to Blizzard's Diablo 3 and Runic's Torchlight 2. Where as Diablo 3 is a strictly controlled one server to rule them all with modding being prohibited, vs Torchlight 2 with modding support, a world editor and flexible multiplayer options. I am assuming Path of the Exile will be using a system similar to Diablo 3 since they'll be using a cash shop style system to purchase perks. |

Well... A private, non-official server wouldn't generate any revenue for the developer (as the cash shop will become useless), unless they had a system where you pay a fee to have the right to host.
I think it's highly unlikely that GGG would allow such servers to exist (even though they will - illegally). In the end it's their decision though. I was originally hoping for some kind of TCP/IP connection between people like Diablo 2 had, but since we wont have the option to create single player characters, that system would not work. |

PoE is FREE! Now given the large variety of leagues they plan to host (everyone should find something that fits them) and the game being run by intelligent developers (so far everything indicates they know well how not to screw things up) + all the (hopefully) huge playerbase of the original game, who would ever have a single thought of playing on a private server or even hosting one? Heck, you'll even be able to host your own paid league with your rules!

Your player run server is a good question, but replace 'server' with 'league' and I think it may be feasible. I hope GGG will allow this kind of gameplay. To nermind, you're right you can pay to get leagues with your own rules but I would like the ability to run that league as well. For instance, suppose I were to pay for a legit-only league, I would like the ability to kick/ban players that are obviously cheating.
As for modding user created content, I doubt it's gonna happen, not necessarily because GGG doesn't want it to, but because I don't think they have the funds and time to create a system, such as a world editor, to support such activities. |

You wouldn't need a world editor to make a mod.
Last I heardfrom chris, as GGG is online only and f2p, they can't officially allow player run servers or mods. I doubt they'd take legal action if someone made a small server for their friends with a bunch of mods on it, but if people tried to make alternate servers with the cosmetics all free, for example, then they wouldn't be happy at all. I just really like to make my own bosses, dungeons, skills and so forth... I created the Diablo 2 mod: Hell Unleashed and run a popular server dedicated to it.
But I guess I'll have Torchlight 2 to do something similar so no biggy if modding won't be possible in Exile; given that it is online only and played through official servers; modding isn't really feasible in that system. |

Although modding is very cool if people started making their own servers that would chop out almost half of GGGs users. Not only that but those servers start making money for the people running them even though they didn't make the game. You have seen wow private servers and so on. How they sell items and admin powers and so on. Flyff private servers even sell cosmetic items just like the legit servers! You must see why this cant be possible. If the game was bought off the shelf then sure modding and so forth would make sence. As you have paid for the game so you can do what you like with it.

If people run their own servers and we don't get any money, then we won't be able to afford to keep maintaining the game and new content will stop being developed!
I'm sure it'd be expensive to fight legally, but if it was actually causing us financial hardship, we'd definitely try to get them shut down. If players feel the need to play on servers with different rules rather than the official servers, then they should come to us with their opinions and we'll see what we can do in terms of adding modes to the game. Of course this all first requires somebody to basically make their own server files. But I agree that if this becomes a big problem the possibility of player-operated leagues should be further considered.
