How do you check if an item can even be crafted?

Frankly, the crafting in this game is pretty bad. The whole 'too many prefixes/suffixes' thing is retarded. I can understand not being able to double up mods, but not everyone has memorized what every stat is.

So if I consider buying an item that has 5 mods and I say 'oh, well I can craft a 6th mod...maybe?' Is there a way to check other than searching the entire prefix/suffix list and making flash cards?
Mainly memorizing and knowing them by experience :P

Poemods makes it pretty easy http://poemods.com/index.php?item_type=wand

Put it in the vendor window. If it sells for an augmentation it has 6 mods.
Ok and can you have 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes max?
Correct. Can also have 1 implicit max(through corrupting or base item implicit).

Although, I believe you craft two more mods on if you use the appropriate Level 8 Master craft bench.

You can not bypass the 6 explicit mod limit. Some hybrid mods might make it look like there are more mods on the item.

do you happen to know if the 1 socket on an unset ring counts as an implicit, and can corrupting it make the socket disappear?
Hey...is this thing on?

Yup it's an implicit. Getting a new implicit through corrupting will make it disappear.
