[New Support Gem] Remember Frozen Orb from D2?

Frozen Orb from Diablo 2 was basically this sphere that spawned a bunch of Ice Bolts. Why don't we have something like that in this game... but instead of Ice Bolts, pretty much anything you want?

I suggest the Arcane Sphere support gem, which creates a projectile that casts the supported spell multiple times (at a reduced damage effectiveness) in multiple directions and in its immediate vicinity as it travels. With projectile spells, this creates a Frozen Orb effect; with AoE spells, this creates a straight line of AoE centered on the projectile as it moves. It would not work with auras and other reserve spells; pretty much any other spell would be fair game.

Arcane Sphere of Fireball: Like Frozen Orb, but with fire and small AoE explosions.
Arcane Sphere of Summon Skeletons: Straight line of skeletons, might compete with Spell Totem.
Arcane Sphere of Firestorm: Cascading line of AoE fire in the direction of the Sphere.
Arcane Sphere of Frost Wall: Really long wall, but you're already at one end, so you'd have to run to be behind it.
Arcane Sphere of Detonate Dead: Quickly explode all corpses in a line.

Support gem/passives/gear interactions:
* Projectile supports would always effect the core spell, not the Arcane Sphere itself. For example, the Frozen Orb video linked above is about equal to Ice Spear + Arcane Sphere + LMP.
* Totems would fire the spheres as they normally attack enemies. For example, Shockwave Totem + Arcane Sphere would create a sphere-shooting totem; the sphere would continuously cast the knockback nova.
* The Sphere has a set cast time that you can't change. Cast speed from gear, passives, or supports instead increases the rate which the Sphere casts spells; your cast speed is transferred to it.

So what do you guys think? Good idea or not?

This support gem (let's call it Orb) could be used on any projectile spell (edit: see my 3rd post below), which means: a skill with both the Projectile and Spell traits. Right now, that's Fireball, Spark, Freezing Pulse, Ice Spear, and Ethereal Knives. Instead of firing the spell's projectile(s), an Orb projectile would be fired; this projectile would itself fire out many of the spell projectiles rapidly and in random directions as it travels. Contact with the Orb projectile itself would do nothing; it deals no damage (directly) and has 100% pierce (although the projectiles it fires might not).

Chain, Pierce, and Fork supports would always effect the spell projectiles, since they can't effect the Orb itself (100% pierce). The support gem might reduce damage effectiveness, increase mana cost, and/or add a cooldown.

Options regarding other support gem interactions, feel free to give your suggestions:
*Lesser/Greater Multiple Projectiles (I'm leaning Option 2 for simplicity)
Option 1) Increasing the number of projectiles with a support such as Lesser Multiple Projectiles would increase the number of Orbs fired at once, but would not increase the number of projectiles fired per Orb. Skills with additional projectiles built into the skill itself (such as Ethereal Knives) would only fire one Orb by default; the additional projectiles there are fired by the Orb instead of granting additional Orbs.
Option 2) The modified skill always fires a single Orb; the support gem modifies the number of projectiles the Orb fires at once.
* Faster Projectiles (I'm thinking Option 1)
Option 1) Both Orb and spell projectile speed increased.
Option 2) Only Orb projectile speed increased.
Option 3) Only spell projectile speed increased.
* Spell Totem (I'm thinking Option 1)
Option 1) Creates a totem which fires Orbs.
Option 2) Supports do not stack; Orb support has no effect.

So what do you guys think? Good idea or not?

Wait... chain and and fork don't stack with pierce? That kinda fucks up my build. I can never tell what's going on with projectiles flying everywhere, so I didn't know that they didn't stack.

No, actually I think this is a cool idea for a high-level support gem. I hope it's workable.

This one got me really excited. That would be awesome, I'd have so much fun with that spell!

I feel that there is a bigger issue with the current frost spells. Overall they are too similar to one another and just adding another frost Gem before fixing what the game has seems moot.

I also feel that this suggestion seems too powerful. It would be interesting if there were END GAME gems and this was one for frost sure, but remember that it has to be balanced as well so not everyone uses it and not anything else.

Did you even read the first post? Or even payed attention to what you read?
It doesn't have to be limited to frost.

Fireballs, arrows and other projectile-like skills.
