Firestorm Avatar of Fire + Cold to Fire + Herald of Ice + Added Cold Mathematics

Hey Guys

So I am building a Firestorm char and I want to work out if adding cold damage to Firestorm and converting it that way might be viable. My question at the end of the day is, is the added fire damage we get from converting the cold damage to fire, an 'increased' modifier or a 'more' modifier?

So, time for Maths!!

Lets assume that all of our gems are level 18 and 0% quality. This means that:

Firestorm: 103–154 fire damage which is an average of 128.5
Cold to Fire: 50% of cold damage converted to fire and 27% extra cold added as fire.
Herald of Ice: 44-59 cold damage added to spells which is an average of 51.5.
Added Cold: 73–110 cold damage, which is an average of 91.5
Avatar of Fire: 50% of all cold damage converted to fire damage. (for now we ignore other damage types).

This means that 100% of the cold damage is converted to fire (CtF + AoF, see http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1045885 for confirmation) and we get an extra 27% of our cold damage as fire damage.

So our total average cold damage is 51.5 + 91.5 = 143
We then get 27% of this cold damage as fire damage - 143*(127/100) = 181.61.

Firestorm has a 20% damage efficiency, meaning that the total fire damage added to Firestorm is 181.61/5 = 36.322

This means that firestorm does an average of 143 + 36.32 = 164.82 base damage, and this is then multiplied out with all the other increased fire, elemental and spell damage from the passive skill tree and gear - right? (this is what I am unsure of)

So this gives us 164.82 / 143 = 1.159, meaning that we are doing 15.9% more firestorm damage.
why u dont use pyre? 100% cold to fire

im currently doing
trap+multitrap+firestorm... epic :D

As your math has taught you, you're wasting a ton of points and 2 gems, to get a small DPS boost. Use other supports.

Thats not a bad idea! Maybe I should. I am not really stacking burning damage with the build, but its a decent ring which allows me to skip the Avatar of Fire at least. Unless I can get over 100% conversion... I can't right?

Aaaawh and increasing firestorm's damage through the trap nodes? That sounds like an awesome build :D

You're right, it doesn't seem like a lot...

BUT!

I realized I might have made a mistake somewhere. My understanding of Spell damage and Elemental damage is that damage can be scaled multiple times if it is converted. If i a am running Herald of Ice, won't the spell damage and elemental damage increase the added spell damage from that spell quite significantly because it is a spell, and once its converted to Fire damage it would be increased again by the spell and elemental damage? Is this correct? Will it also work for the Added Cold gem?

No

Also HoI has 30%dmg effectiveness if you are planning to support it with the added cold dmg

Yeah, no. A single modifier can never apply twice to the same value, and multipliers are not calculated until after Damage Based On and Conversion have occured.

You cannot Convert over 100% either.

It's a terrible waste of Support slots and Passives. You might as well just link Increased AoE and Concentrated Effect for a more powerful Damage boost (also two Supports, but no Passives nor Reservation), or the aforementioned Trap (comes with its own set of downsides though).
Ah allright. Good to know. Yea it doesn't seem like its worth it in the end.
