Rotate items in inventory

The inventory space and the size of most items is quite satisfying. But what bothers most games of the same genre, is that when it has space for an item but this space is in a different position (Example: if I have 3 free slots across and picked up a sword that takes up 3 spaces vertically I can not carry it).

My suggestion is to have a command that allows the rotation of items to make it easier to pack the backpack.

Thank you for your attention!

This would make 3 and 4 tall items less "bulky" which would sort of defeat the purpose of intentionally having 5 rows.

It's designed that way to make you think what you want to carry and what you want to pickup. Otherwise why not just make it 1x1 grid for every item just like MMO?
Pants are for nephalem, we are exiles, we do not need pants.

you can rotate items in Tetris, why not this? could add a little extra puzzle element to the game :P
This would actually more interesting way to pack the backpack, so you could use the maximum space to carry items, and would not be without several slots are occupied.
Actually we do need a button to somehow order our inventory. Or maybe a way to pay for a second inventory tab (identical to the one we have); one could buy at most 2 extra slots per character. I bet they would sell like butter (for real money i mean) - and it's not like it's going to affect the game's balance in any significant way.

But until then it would be nice to have the option to automatically sort the inventory to make room for something that we pick up (i.e. if there is a way to rearrange the items so that what you pick up fits, then the algorithm should find it).

The performance cost should be very little since the number of slots is small, and the algorithm should kick in only in certain conditions (i.e. when there is no space to get something).

The room for the account stash is great, 4 tabs. But on the personal inventory for your character its a bit small, so the room needs to be used as efficiently as possible. Too many times I have open inventory spaces in my characters inventory that could be used, but since we cant rotate items they go to waste. Also, an auto organize button would be great.
Problems with this idea:

It breaks the intentional choice to have only 5 rows in your backpack. (as func_door mentioned)

Think about it realistically (which I believe they are going for with the backpack, realism). You wouldn't store a sword in a leather (assuming, I know, but it's an acceptable assmption) sideways. It'd destroy the bag. That's why anything long is stored vertically in a backpack rather than horizontally. Because it wouldn't fit then.

Buying tabs would indeed break the end-game. You can only enter a map 6 times and therefore, only bring out 6 inventory spaces worth of loot. It was made that way intentionally. Allowing people to buy inventory tabs would break that mechanic. Thereby, being game-breaking. Even if only end-game.

Rotating armor would be nice, but still, it would take it more space in a realistic backpack if placed horizontally. Nit-picking, I know, but still.

If a suggestion basically means a design choice in the game is broken/avoided, then it is indeed game-breaking. And so, it cannot be put in without changing the game to account for it.

This is a great idea. As far as realism, they didn't try to make the inventory look like the inside of a backpack. More realistically, If I had a suitcase and I can see that I have room for an item to be lain horizontally across the bottom, I'm going to turn the item, and then lie it in the suitcase.

As far as defeating the purpose of bulky items being bulky, no, they would still take up just as much space. All this would do is allow the efficient use of inventory space and not have to look for gloves, boots, or single-cell items to fill in.

I think people are overestimating how much benefit this would actually bring.
Half the time most of your space is full, the other half the time you would only fit 1-2 more items in the available space with rotations. This is because the items you can't fit in your inventory tend to be the massive ones that a 2x3/4. Rotating it is still going to take up 2 rows, which means it won't fit in the same column as anything which is 4 rows high anyway.
On average, I would only expect to fit 1 more item. And since GGG have said they are considering some extra currency only slots (which would have a similar end effect), I don't see how this could be broken.
