ice shot and on-hit effects
i've been testing out on hit effects to ascertain the level of synergy between revelry and my prospective ice shot build. in short, some odd things occurred. sometimes the AoE cone was considered a hit, and sometimes it was not. I’ll just get right to the tests:
ice spear test
ice spear + cybil's paw = 8 life gain
ice spear + cybil's paw + LMP, if shotgun = 24 life gain as anyone would guess, when one projectile hits one enemy, the on hit effect triggers. Ice spear allows you to hit one enemy with all three projectiles from LMP in close range, or shotgun them. since three projectiles hit, the on hit effect triggers three times.
ice nova test
ice nova + cybil's paw = 8 life gain
this test is just to confirm that AoE hits still trigger on hit effects.
arctic breath test
arctic breath + cybil's paw = 8 life gain
arctic breath + cybil's paw + LMP, if shotgun = 24 life gain arctic breath + cybil's paw + 0<x<100% pierce chance = life gain from every pierced enemy, as well as life gain from any enemy hit by AoE explosion. example: i pierce one enemy with the projectile and it explodes on a second one close behind it, damaging both. 1 + 2 = 3 hits, 24 life gain the first two tests here confirm what we already knew from ice spear testing. the last test implies that multiple functions of one cast each count as separate hits. this is relevant a little later.
ice shot arrow shotgun test
ice shot + level 3 LGoH = 10 life gain
ice shot + level 3 LGoH + LMP + close range = 10 life gain the first test here confirms that the hit triggers the on hit effect. the second test shows that it is impossible to “shotgun” with arrows. In other words, enemies at close range can never get hit by more than one arrow, regardless of the number of arrows you shoot per attack.
ice shot cone test
ice shot + level 3 LGoH + frost wall + 0% pierce chance = 10 life gain
for those who don’t know, ice shot has two ways in which it does damage: the initial arrow hit, and a cone that shoots out of wherever a hit occurs, parallel to the trajectory of the arrow. In this test, I’m putting a frost wall between me and my target, so that the result is only the cone and not the arrow. this test confirms that damage from the cone, apart from the arrow, is considered a hit.
ice shot cone overlap/shotgun test
ice shot + level 3 LGoH + frost wall + 0% pierce chance + LMP = 10 life gain
ice shot + level 3 LGoH + frost wall + 0% pierce chance + LMP + 73% increased AoE = 10 life gain these tests are just like the previous tests in that I’m only hitting with cones. however, I’ve added two cones that appear to stack. the first implies that it’s not possible to shotgun the cones, since I’m gaining 10 life per attack rather than 30. the second strongly implies this, as the cone effect is considered an area affect. though it’s much more difficult to ascertain than LGoH, three cones also seem to do less damage than one cone. If shotgunning were occurring, we would expect a 2.1 multiplier on damage (.7 * 3).
ice shot + arrow with pierce test
ice shot + level 3 LGoH + frost wall + 100% pierce chance = 10 life gain
this is another odd result. since the initial arrow is considered a hit, and the cone apart from the arrow is a hit, we would expect two hits if an enemy receives damage from both the arrow and the cone. this is not the case, or at least the on-hit effect is not triggering twice.
summary test
ice shot + level 3 LGoH + frost wall + 100% pierce chance + LMP + 73% increased AoE = 10 life gain
this is essentially a confirmation of the last two tests, together into one test. according to on-hit effects, i neither shotgun cones, nor hit the enemy with the arrow and the cone when this is visually the case. is anyone aware of some small ice shot or hit caveat that would explain this apparent discrepancy? could someone who is on the garena server test this as well? "This is impossible to do. An enemy hit by the arrow can't also be hit by the cone. Last edited by Mark_GGG#0000 on Aug 19, 2014, 12:56:55 AM

" normally yes, but with frost wall between you and your enemy, and 100% pierce chance, shouldn't this be possible? |

i'd really love a more thorough response to this thread, by anyone: i just don't understand! i get that an enemy cannot be hit by both the arrow and the area effect so that it wouldn't deal double damage to initial targets all the time. in the case of frost wall, wouldn't the enemy get hit by the cone and arrow at different times, and this no longer be the case? i also don't understand why you can't stack the cones together; they visually appear to stack.
i've created a video detailing the apparent discrepancy here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1i-3nRdXFVM |

I get the part with LMP/GMP. For some reason spells are allowed to shotgun (fireball with LMP/GMP or ice spear etc), but arrow skills not. Same for cones of Ice Shot, even if they overlap, "Shotgun" would work if they could apply damage more than once from same shot, but as it damages only once, it gives only 10 hp back.
I personally think it's partially unfair that arrow skills are NOT allowed to shotgun, compared to spells, but then, think of 50k DPS split arrow builds shotgunning rares/bosses, no need for Single Target skills at all then. As it currently is, due to shotgunning being not available to bow users, every on-hit effect (mana gain on hit, life gain on hit etc) is applied : only ONCE per ATTACK(skill use, NOT projectile) per MONSTER (even with pierce/overlap of AoE or anything else), while for SPELLS ONCE per EACH PROJECTILE (meaning availibility of shotgunning) per MONSTER. This easily shows that on-hit effects scale better with spells due to more hits being possible with them. " With current state of pierce and mechanisms it's possible for cones to overlap or arrows to both hit with cone and themselves, but damage does NOT stack. 100% arrow pierce ice shot hitting one mob closer to player and one further behind could allow for both the cone and arrow to hit the SECOND mob (the one behind), but damage wont be doubled... " There's just a problem with that though LGoH doesn't apply on spells. And the only way you can get that to work is with: |

There's just problem with frost wall, it doesnt work properly with Ice Shot. If you shoot it into a group of mobs, cones will overlap and mobs will get damaged a lot, while if you put frost wall in front of a boss and shoot, only 1 cone appears and not overlaps, boss gets damaged only once ...
It IS a bug after all, check in game. |
