eternal orbs can somone explain?

i have re-readed plenty of times but i cant seem to understand what exactly it do can somone explain so even a noob like me could understand?

Let's say you have a rare item with 5 stats on it. You want to upgrade it with an Exalted orb to get a certain 6th stat, but since it's random you might not get the stat you want.

You use the Eternal orb on the item first, and the Eternal turns into an "imprint" that you can later used to restore the rare item to its current state.

Then you use the Exalt on the item to try and get the stat you need. You get a stat you don't want from the Exalt, so you restore the item with the Eternal imprint and you can try Exalting it again if you want.

You can use an Eternal in similar fashion before modifying an item in any way that you might want to undo later. For instance, you can Eternal your 5-link armor before trying to fuse it into a 6-link. You can Eternal it before using Chromatic orbs to change the socket colors. You could Eternal it before using a Chaos orb. So on and so forth.

The only change you can't undo with an Eternal orb is using a Vaal orb on the item. Vaal orb changes are permanent and can't be reverted.

it creates an imprint, wich saves how the item was (sockets,links, mods, rarity.), so that you can change it and if you are not happy with the results you can use the imprint on the item again to restore it to how it was.

the imprint can only be used on the item it was used. let's say you eternal a vaal regalia and then scour it. it becomes a white item, but the imprint you got will only work on THAT vaal regalia, and no other.

also you can eternal a 5 link item, and then use 1000 fusings on it, and you got a 4 link, you use the imprint and you getyour 5 link back.

if you are happy with the result of your crafting, vendoring the imprint you made will give you a regret orb.
