Different Sounds for items dropped on the ground, depending by their quality type

First, i need to say thanks to Dark0mens who started a question on sc42 stream channel about this suggestion.

If would be nice if items dropped on the ground could sound different, depending on quality category " white, rare, unique, etc", that way ppl will know if there's something important on the ground, especially when there is a lot of drop or when ppl do party runs or grinding-rush.

example^^:
if sword = metal sound + ding = [quality] normal
If sword = metal sound + diiing = [quality] rare
If sword = metal sound + diiiiing = [quality] unique
If sword = metal sound + diiiiiiing = [quality] etc

Hmm, every item type like weapons, ring, amulets, etc will have their own different sound. So it will sort of clash with your idea. Its either you have the sound that tells you the type or quality but it's difficult to have both. Well that's how I understand it. Is that what you meant?
I like this idea. I don't think it would clash at all. If the item is of poor or normal quality, then you get the normal drop sound. However, if the item is rare or unique, the normal sound would be replaced with a special sound so everyone has an equal chance of noticing it dropping.
This is a good idea, alternate cues while people are busy would help alert them to something.

Also, for the devs, this is a very easy thing to manipulate with some simple sound tools like FMOD. FMOD will let you have one sound file, but be able to call all the modifications to it as separate sounds, which is amazing for helping to save space in sounds, so by altering pitch and duration, you could have all the separate tones and durations the OP mentioned, but only need to store one "ding" sound file.
How about just make the item have a glow effect, repeating sounds get annoying, especially when you're killing large groups of mobs.

By the quality of an item? I guess if it were a big difference like, a cracked wep vs superior, a cracked would sound like peices of metal falling and the sup would go SHING ;]

I like this idea. One game I know used a coloured glow to signify their quality like a Purple glow for unique, blue glow for magic and normal white glow for white/normal items.
