disappearing characters

basically what happens is that i can log in just fine but none of my characters show up on the character list. at first i thought maybe they were deleted but then i noticed that the league drop down menu was blank and when i click on it it doesn't expand to let me select a league. After being logged in and looking at a blank character list for about 20 seconds it logs me out. This happened to me once and i waited a little while and tried again and i was able to log back in and access my characters again but then i logged out in order to change characters and I haven't been able to gain access to my characters again. I have tried closing and reopening the game but that doesnt help.
