Mercenary/Follower System in Path of Exile just like in Diablo 2 LoD
This thread is to discuss on should we have Mercenary/Follower system in PoE, and why it should not, if by any chance anyone that disagree with it.
Lets, get an overview here. So, I found some old threads mentioned about the idea of having mercenary or follower in PoE, but it seems the idea just buried by time and never gets implemented. Is the idea of having a mercenary or follower is not appropriate? The hype is so high when the follower system is implemented in LoD, and everyone is crazy with gearing and optimization with their assistant by equipping them good gears and syncing with their build. Having a follower doesn't necessary overpowered, I used to remember having a follower in LoD doesn't make the game easier, but making it more engaged and alive. The general difference of having and not having a follower is that, you are dwelling in the story with a companion who can helps you but not make things easier. One of the reason I thought that this never gets implemented because PoE platform is based on online, where players are encouraged to get into parties if not solo. Implementing the follower system might cause the party system abandoned. But there is still the option to party up with friends or the purpose of stacking IIQ. I still remember the fun of giving the good unique to my follower when I don't need or got a spare. How worried I am worried when she is close to death and I have to spam my potion on her. I miss the time where I am able to spend more items on her besides myself, concerning more factors than being individualistic of my own character. If, players are able to have a follower, the depth of the game will go deeper, more considerable builds, sinking of currencies and items, flow of economy heighten, hence demands of items will grows and lastly players are able to enjoy the fun factor of having a side kick besides them. So, anyone think we should have mercenaries/followers in path of exile? I'm for it. Another layer of character build interaction is always great. Especially one that isn't just a layer of RNG.

It just doesnt fit imo.
This isn't some high fantasy world of swords and sorcery. This is drop your ass on a beach to die come at me bro check out my gnarled branch and shabby jerkin world. A wise cracking sidekick just doesnt fit in my perspective of Wraeclast. In addition it would be a balancing nightmare to make the follower "helpful" but not make the game easier, nigh on impossible imo. Noblesse oblige

I personally don't mind the idea of having a D2 style Mercenary, however, GGG has stated numerous times that they are very much opposed to "mandatory" skills and items (remember how they took out phase run?)
And in D2 almost every single build would get an Act2 Polearm mercenary and make the insight runeword and basically have infinite mana from that point onwards. You'd see similar stuff in PoE, especially since you can simply stick clarity and/or vitality, discipline or purity of elements on your merc and then not have to worry about it yourself. Mercenaries like d2 and d3 won't fit POE. I mean have you seen the Enchantress? She is too clean looking (too "blonde") IMO. Lindon fits the environment perfectly. Kormac is ok.
The closest one I could come up with is a pet system, where you could put 1 item (any item), and have the stats of the item apply to the pet, like D2 Iron Golem. I imagine they would just get stuck at caves and die to squids flanking and body blocking. DPS-wise, an exile with a pet should share part of his attack to his pet, something like 10:90. So the exile would have 90% DPS, pet would have 10%. Passives could improve this ratio up to 100:0, an exile completely dependent on a pet (beast master/tamer/trainer pokemon i choose you) I need more purple titles

Thanks in advance. " Of course, the ability to cast aura from Follower system would be excluded since that would make every player opts to cast dozen of auras. By chance of having the adaptation of follower system in PoE, I hope it would get improved and diverse yet viable for any types of build rather than like D2, Polearm FTW all the way. " Concurrently of having rogue exile that against the player, why there is no compatibility of an exile that has chosen to assist the player in the storyline? The follower system could revolve around a story of another exiles which path coincide with the player, resolving in a same journey to overcome or handle their fate together.
