Is PoE starting to suffer mechanics bloat?
"The leagues run for 4 months, and so far every single mechanic from both leagues has been added to the game (though Onslaught only as unique/strongbox mod). "Like 2 years from now" would have an additional 12 mechanics bloating the system. I'm afraid you're gonna start to feel the bloat as soon as the next league. Imagine a league with rogue exiles, shrines, nemesis mods, strongboxes, invaders, and (to make up something silly) escort quests! | |
" I love Rogue Exiles. The extra loot is like Christmas.
Just dropped for me from a chest
I love the new chests as well. Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do. Benjamin Franklin Last edited by Artanthos#0192 on Mar 18, 2014, 9:50:39 PM

" Just because they've added all of them so far, doesn't mean they have to keep doing so indefinitely. I'm sure once they feel there are too many, they could easily just do a poll to see which ones should be dropped for the next season. |

I like the mechanics. RNG Bloat is more like it. Don't get me wrong, I like RNG, but there's a point where it becomes too much and IMHO, PoE is nearing that breakpoint.

There is not even a problem. All this content is great and improves the gameplay alot while leveling. The frequency can be scaled down later on still at any time. Shrines could be reduced to some effective and useful ones tho.

Bloat can be avoided by having higher level gating on each mechanic.
If Rogue Exiles start appearing in level 15 zones, Strongboxes in 20+, Shrines in 30+ and Nemesis mods in 40+, the complexity creep is delayed a lot and newbies aren't overwhelmed so fast. I'd rather they do that (and keep all the good stuff from 4m leagues) than start retiring things. Le Toucan Will Return

No such thing as mechanics 'bloat'. More is always better. Diversity and added complexity are ALWAYS welcomed in any game i play.
If you want 'simple', there are a thousand forgetable similar titles out there for you. For years i searched for deep truths. A thousand revelations. At the very edge...the ability to think itself dissolves away.Thinking in human language is the problem. Any separation from 'the whole truth' is incomplete. My incomplete concepts may add to your 'whole truth', accept it or think about it

"Newbies aren't the only ones playing characters below level 40, though, and I'd hate to have to wait that long to have the full complement of features in each area. Clearly, numbers would be up to GGG and it's best not to worry too much about critiquing specific values, but for me, 1.1.0's Ambush League has seen the game reach a kind of tipping point in terms of areas that are interesting to play in their own right. It's made what others call "the leveling process" and I call "the game" far more entertaining, and I wouldn't want to miss out on any of it in that time. I know you were only proposing that as an alternative to removing things, though, so I can't argue too strongly - I don't want to see a lot of mechanics removed either. I mean, most loot drops I see are boring two-socket whites I have no use for, but we don't remove them; having things appear that aren't game-changing isn't itself a problem as long as there's a good variety of interesting occurences happening. I can of course understand GGG revising the lists of shrines or whatever to remove things they don't think are impactful enough, but I'd expect them to do that even if no new mechanics were ever added, that's just sensible game design. |

I kind of agree with the sentiment that we're just getting too much random silly shit thrown at us sometimes.
I don't really think it's so bad now, but I can see it getting a little ridiculous down the road as they add more league gimmicks. IGN: Smegmazoid
