Single player offline version

When I first read about this game I was a little disappointed to learn it was an online game only.

You see, I've been plaing MMORPG's forever and to be honest 'I'm sick to death of em'. So I was really hoping for another single player experience like Titan Quest or Dungeon Seige.

So is there any chance you might release a singleplayer version of the game in the future?

Something like Runic have done with Torchlight, where there is a standalone singleplayer game AND a MMORPG.

Just a thought *grin*.

That is also my question, as I understand that the exploration/playing will not work without an internet connection (i.e. in single-player).

Actually there was a place where they advertised the game as single/multi-player possible:

"Players may explore Wraelest either singly or with a band of fellow castaways. Groups may number from four to eight players. The cap lifts in towns, where players may trade items and gems with others." - http://www.gamepro.com/article/previews/216339/path-of-exile-first-impressions/
I definitely enjoy single player games and actually just started playing through Titan Quest again. I do much prefer multiplayer in these types of games though.

However, I believe adding the single player side of the game also invites much more exploiting top be done. Now and previously, I refuse to play Titan Quest online because at least 50% of the players have hacked characters. I assume having the game online only will make it much more secure, and in my opinion more than makes up the negative aspects. Imagine D2 without any of the exploits. :)
All of the game can be played either alone or with a party. If you're playing with multiple people, then the difficulty and rewards of the area scale up.

Many members of our development team prefer playing completely alone, only interacting with other people in towns to show off the items they found.

The solo play is still played on our online servers which means there are no hacked characters because the data is stored serverside.

Once the game goes live, and player numbers increase drastically, how will one's desire to play solo be reconciled with higher player numbers?

This is fantastic news Chris. When I played Diablo 2, I played it solo and I only went online to trade with people. Looks like I'll be able to do the same thing in PoE. Great news!

The areas where you are fighting monsters are instanced for your party, so if you are playing by yourself you won't see the many other people who are in the same area. Just in the towns and stuff you'll see all of the others.
This thread cleared a lot of things up for me. I like to party 20% of the time and run my own instances 80% of the time. Glad I can have my cake and eat it too.

I think you misunderstood him. Whether you are playing solo and with other people, you will still be playing online. This may be done through a private, password protected game like D2 had.
You will still be in the same world as the other players, not in your own created game. It's just when you go out of town without being in a group, you will be by yourself in an instance of the area.
