trading off spell damage vs spell crit chance

Since the spell damage is part of the base damage which is multiplied up by the crit, it seems to me that there is a diminishing return on piling on more crit chance (assuming you have a high crit chance to begin with, for example from tree nodes).

Let's say if i'm looking at a shield with spell damage and spell crit chance. It seems to me that i want to prioritize spell damage over crit chance.

Example

100 damage

base crit chance 5%
crit chance increase 200%
crit mult increase 100%

shield 1 : +30 spell damage +40 crit chance
shield 2 : +10 spell damage +80 crit chance

(Formula from wiki)

100*1.3 + (100*1.3)*0.05*(1+2.4)*(0.5+1.5*1) = 174.2

100*1.1 + (100*1.1)*0.05(1+2.8)*(0.5+1.5*1) = 151

So even though shield 2 has double the additional crit chance the spell damage is more important.

Is my reasoning correct ?

I guess it would work both ways. Given low crit chance and high starting spell damage, i'd want to prioritize the crit chance.

Naturally, if i had lots of exalts in the stash i'd go for good numbers for both, but if i _have_ to choose...

Thanks,

This is correct.

Keep in mind that a higher critchance also means that you shock/freeze/burn more often and refill your surgeon's flasks faster.

Unfortunately I don't think they will since it's my traps which are critting, and not my "attack".
