question about goddess scorned

so this sword converts 100% of damage to fire damage.lets say im using a spec throw+cast on crit+EK and the EK procs.does it then deal only fire damage?not sure about the mechanics here

It depends a bit on how they coded Scorned, since it did exist before the trigger gems and it may not have been future-proofed correctly.

My gut says that spells would do zero damage since they aren't weapon-based. The "only deal damage with Scorned" mod should imply that the source has to be you (not a totem, minion, or trap/mine), and that it has to be weapon based (an attack source, not a spell source).

My guess would be that it doesn't work. The ancestral bond code seems to be fairly functional, but the game is very complex.

Original poster, maybe you missed the "You can only deal damage with this Weapon" line. That was specifically put in place to make sure it wouldn't be exploited for things like Ethereal Knives.

"with x Weapon" in this game means Attacks only, not Spells. This is because Attacks are the only skills that actually scale off of your weapon's base stats - that is, they deal damage with that weapon. Ethereal Knives does not deal damage with a Weapon. It is a spell that deals Spell damage, which is not weapon damage.

CharanJaydemyr, who was the supporter that worked with GGG to design this unique, has already stated that he dislikes the idea of the procs bypassing his original intention. And indeed, it would be a severe bug if indeed it did.
