Problems with PoE launching in Steam

I have always played PoE through Steam and as of yesterday afternoon, the game will not launch.

After clicking the "Play" button in the Steam client, the usual "Path of Exile - Steam" window will pop up to indicate that it is attempting to launch. Then, this window will disappear - as it normally does - except nothing happens after this.

The Windows Task Manager indicates that there is no instance of PoE running after this process.

Any ideas?

EDIT: I have also tried to un-install/re-install and still it will not launch.

The attempt to start the PoE.exe directly gave the message a dll is missing.
