How do I get Cast on Critical to work please??

I just got the gem Cast on Critical as a reward for finishing a quest, and I am confused on how it can be used....
It says the linked spells cannot be cast directly, so how would I get it to ever fire?? If I attach it to an attack spell then I cannot use that spell unless I get a critical with that spell, so it seems unusable. Maybe I am missing something, but if the gem makes it impossible to ever cast a spell attack then how can you ever get a critical hit with that attack?? Someone please clear this up for me!! |

Attack and spell are not the same thing. Attacks refer to skills that use a weapon - Cleave, Rain of Arrows, Whirling Blades, that sort of thing. Spells do not use weapons - Fireball, Enduring Cry, Detonate Dead, etc. Every active skill gem is either an attack or a spell, and you can check which it is, if you're unsure, in the gem's tags.
So to use Cast on Critical, you have to link both an attack and a spell to it. you can still use the attack, but not the spell - when you crit with the attack, the spell is cast.
