Critical hits and damage reduction

Since physical damage reduction is dependent on the damage dealt, what happens in the case of a critical hit?

Is the damage reduction for an incoming critical hit calculated as if no critical hit was dealt or does the extra damage from the critical hit effectively reduce the target's damage reduction?
