Once you’ve collected a set of cards you can craft them into a game badge. Like the current badges, they are tied to your account and are shown on your profile. Unlike the current badges, crafting game badges earns you marketable items like emoticons, profile backgrounds, and coupons. Level up your badge by collecting the set again and earning more items.

So long story short you can craft badges and this process could yield to stuff such as Path of Exile Wallpapers which you could display as your profile background.

Okay thanks. Not really interested in the cards, will buy through the website :)
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

Steam trading cards can be traded or bought or sold on the marketplace. If you collect all the cards in a set (typically 5-8 depending on the game) you can craft a badge, badges are just little things you can display on your steam profile to show others. You get some xp for your profile level, an emoticon usable in steam chats that pertains to the game (most likely will be the various orbs) a profile background that is art from the game, and it has a chance to give you a random coupon for a discount on another steam game.

Typically the cards themselves and the backgrounds are custom high res art of something from the game, it could be art we have seen before, or it could be completely new, for reference here is the art from a Monaco card (not the profile background)

I got another question:

If i install the Steamversion, will the update and future updates run from the steam servers (very fast for me), or redirect to the path of exile servers (not that fast) anyway?
thank you

Can be both, it depends on how steam works. But i think it will be on GGG's servers.
In regards to 1), there is a simple, mostly working trick:

- start the download of POE in steam, so that you get the folder name of POE under Steam\SteamApps\common. Folder name will be "Path of Exile" most likely.

- cancel the DL, copy your old POE folder to Steam\SteamApps\common and rename it properly

- restart the steam DL of POE. Steam does an integrity and folder check before every DL and should recognize POE as "is already here". The progress bar should jump to 80-90%, a few files will be downloaded, and you`re good to go

- Note: it may take a while for Steam to recognize the game. And there is a slim chance it wont work.

There you go, save yourself the new 4gb download :)

Chris said that if you have steam version update will use steam servers not GGG's.

That won't work.

All GGPK files will have a slightly different layout.

This is because it's generated by the patcher based on what you need to download. Someone who went from version A to B to C will have a different layout then someone who went from version A to C directly.

The steam version has a layout that is designed to minimize the amount of patching required when going through steam (with it's diffing algorithms in mind).

So yes, unfortunately while they contain the same files, they are in a different order with different holes between them.

I want the achievements though.
