boss runing issue
|
Greetings. I would like to ask one big question. as i seen in diablo 2 only option for character to get good items is to do 'boss runs' again and again. And that makes the game rather boring then integrating.I would like to know how are game developers looking into that? to the whole "boss run" thing?
Repent! That's what i'm talking about!

i hope you have to restart the full act(1,2,3) quest for each boss run.. the bosses should drop good loot but you cant farm them like in diablo. that is a nice option for me

As opposed to running through the same high-level dungeons/areas (with the same high-level normal enemies) again and again?
The reasoning behind boss runs stems simply from the fact that the hardest enemies are bosses, and having the best loot drop from anything other than the hardest enemies runs counter to the usual progression of RPGs. Also, in Diablo II you could (and still can, I expect) get a pretty decent selection of gear from running the level 85 side areas in Act I Hell - not as quickly as an absolute-top-tier sorceress could teleport to a boss, but a lot safer and therefore a lot less high-end gear required to run in the first place. I have wandered through insanity;
I have walked the spiral out. Heard its twisted dreamed inanity In a whisper, in a shout. In the babbling cacophony The refrains are all the same: "[permutations of humanity] are unworthy of the name!" |

Yeah. You're going to have to grind something whether it's bosses or mobs.

Well, as far as I remember, when PoE was just announced I read that GGG were considering the monsters in the final difficulty to be all of the same strength (and have the same drop chance etc) so you could choose where to grind the last levels. IMHO that is a very good idea:P

I am playing the alpha at the moment, and thought I'd answer this. (With permission)
Path of Exile is designed for online play, and everything that goes with it. Hitting the same areas again and again is kind of the point (and not just the bosses). It is designed to be enjoyable to play every day. So the hard core, online, gear grinding player really is the target player. I do think there is a lot for casual players as well, but the game is targeted more to the hard core. It is worth noting that it is designed with this in mind, so it is set up to still be engaging when you are repeating areas. The game is hard, you will be replaying areas just to get levelled and geared to make progress (well, I notice some players don't seem to need that as much as I do). You will be getting gear not just for your current character, but to set up for future ones. The default level is not the usual "so you have never touched a mouse before" kind of thing you get in other ARPGs. A lot of the fun of the game is playing with the builds. I was having fun tooling up a witch character into what I thought was an ultimate build. It churned through most monsters. When I hit the end of Act I boss, it just died. I relied too much on damage, and left it very squishy. I needed to go back and entirely redo my witch. But it was fun. And I will revisit that build, but it is not one that can solo. So, yes, you do rerun areas of the game. But it was designed with that in mind. The game is not for players who want to run through once for the story, and then wait for an expansion (although I am sure there are players of Path of Exile who will play though it once and be quite satisfied). It is for people who want to play frequently, and really explore the game and how it works. I hope that answers the question sufficiently. | |

That's some very interesting insight.
I hope GGG adds enough flavor to make the repeated playing more interesting. Not just in visual and random layout terms (though those are important) but also in terms of story and the world of Wraeclast. What if there was a 200 page tome of the history of Wraeclast and pages from the tome would occasionally drop as loot. The pages wouldn't be worth anything but I could definitely see players working to complete the book and being excited when another page drops. Obviously writing all that would be a lot of work but they could easily contract a fantasy author to do it. Forum Sheriff

" That does sound interesting, maybe the "Tome of Wraeclast" or whatever, could even be currency item of sorts. I really liked reading through the area and monster sections, so that could be a viable option at some point. Beyond that, boss running and simply replaying areas is to be expected from this genre of games. If you could get all your equipment from just going through every area once, where would the challenge be? Would you want to go through the game more than once? Things need to be redundant to a point, when it exceeds that point it feels like you are grinding and ceases to be fun. |

Unlockables and achievements are a bit lame, but they work.
Also, I was thinking something like a special arena where you can challenge gladiator monsters and based on the challenge and how you did it (time, dead party members etc) you get more or less rewards. Perhaps it needs to be like you can only spend an hour a day in this arena or something. And there needs to be a ladder of course:) I don't know how lame this arena would be considering the lore, atmosphere etc, but it is something that can keep the game fresh. In Gran Turismo 5 the seasonal events were pretty nice in keeping the game fun a bit longer for example. |
