The Scion.......unlockable?

So the cat's out of the bag with PoE's new class, the Scion.

What bothers me is this class is being touted in the article as an unlockable only class, requiring rescuing her from a cage at the end of the game.

What does this even mean? The end of normal difficulty or merciless? Does she need to be unlocked on a per league basis?(This would be extremely lame, having to rush a character just so you can start a "real" character). Is this class allowed in races?

Also unnerving is the fact that the writer calls the spectral blade a unique attack the Scion specializes in. I'm hoping this is just the writer's inexperience with PoE's open skill system and the skill isn't only usable by scions.

Highly doubtful. That'd be pretty dumb.

Very doubtful. Going to assume you need a Scion to get it, but since it's just a skill gem it can be used by anybody. Would be a major change if they changed how open the skill system was!

I'm assuming maybe the Scion gets Spectral Blade at the start or in a quest, and otherwise you'd only see it drop or something
I suspect it will be at the end of normal. I think it is a great idea. Also, the skill will obviously be available to all classes.
Its to protect noobs from choosing class and getting overwhelmed. Good idea.
I never would have expected this from GGG...the scion seems completely over-powered. It can turn every melee attack into ranged? It seems like once people unlock it, scions are all we'll see running around. I liked the 6-class system, it was balanced. I thought melee was supposed to be made to be as good as ranged in its own way...now it looks like they want to make PoE a completely ranged game?

Maybe I misunderstood the article, but it sounds like putting INTRINSIC bonuses into one class and not all the rest is contrary to the way the game has been up until now...I hope I'm just not understanding something though.
I'm 100% positive this "spectral melee weapon" is a skill gem, probably a Scion quest reward and otherwise rare drop. It looks from the pictures like it's supported by LMP. The writer described the ability poorly.
