I went to his stream about a week ago just to see what he was up to and saw hearthstone going on ....spent about 20 mins watching and I was flabbergasted as to how he was even having fun let alone the people watching.

But maybe it is fun? I don't really understand how there is 12k people watching him play.

I don't really enjoy watching any games hell even watched a few streams of gta 5 and even that was mind numbing [love playing it though]

But yeah hearthstone ...don't really understand the draw of streaming that live.

Try watching any major fighting game tournament stream, and make sure you're watching a Street Fighter IV top 8. I'm sure anybody would have a great time watching it, even if you've never touched a fighting game in your life.
I spend way too much fucking time lately watching Hearthstone streams. I pretty much don't play PoE anymore as a result.

Why? Well, I was a somewhat competitive Magic the Gathering player in the past, so I think that has something to do with it. But there were Magic streams before, and I never watched those, when I easily could have. What Blizzard has managed to do is streamline the game so that play is faster. Yes, it means it's simpler, without the insane number of intricacies in other digital TCGs, but in this case it really helps to serve the pacing rather than being a simple dumb-down. This, in turn, makes it the most watchable version of the genre, so much more significantly watchable that thousands of people are learning they enjoy watching it.
When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted.

if we use this as an example, than we can say Hearthstone will be a fad that lasts about 6 months. Probably less. Since you know. There's no money at stake.

Actually, Blizzard mentioned MLG tournaments with large cash prizes for Hearthstone.

Also, the players who will steamroll the competition will be those who bought a ton of packs to build sick decks.

Therefore, Hearthstone = P2W!
Remember when I won a screenshot contest and made everyone butt-hurt? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

what I actually assumed was that blizz realized they could sell a whole bunch of digital pics for minimal game development overhead.

Edit. And of course it's p2w ;P

Don't forget to drink your milk 👌
I don't understand it either. I watched a few hearthstone streams, and the number of people that watch that is nothing short of staggering. And it's not like I don't enjoy card games, I too was an avid MTG player for a long time. I've even watched the world series of poker on occasion.

But when someones biggest grip about a game is sitting around waiting on another person who is wasting time intentionally.... I mean really?

I don't know, maybe Kripp has time to read his chat or something when playing thanks to all the down time. I really can't think of another reason someone would watch someone else play hearthstone.

No doubt. But Wizards of the Coast has been doing this for years with Magic: the Gathering Online, at much higher cost to the players, with a shitty UI, making money hand over fist. Seriously, take a moment and watch some Twitch or YouTube of MTGO. Behold its shitty UI and overly complicated gameplay which copies the tabletop card game with misplaced dedication. Proceed to claw out eyes.

Then realize that the fleecers at WotC have the gall to sell a "play with what you get, not what you own" tournament entry ("draft" or "Arena", depending on which game) for about $13.97 (IIRC), while Blizzard's tentative cost for pretty much that same shit is $1.99. Funny thing is, there actually is a demand for this; plenty of people waste their paychecks ponying up that $14 fee, one entry fee at a time.

It was a rich market with weak competition, one which Blizzard knew they could pulverize. Good for them.

people are watching to see the game since they can't play beta is all
When you mentioned the "new hearthstone", I thought about a new kexstone in poe and didn't quite get the sense... never heard of that card game. Maybe I should have a look, at least to have a good head-shake
