There was that massive discussion on this topic a year or 2 ago with hundreds of posts in it, try reading that?

Square, Triangle, Diamond and Circle shapes for gem sockets would be nice, you can even change the Gems themselves to use these shapes too.

What makes RGB socket colors hard to distinguish is that they vary solely in hue. Human vision is not very sensitive to differences in hue, and under dim room lighting, green and blue sockets can sometimes resemble each other. It would help a great deal if you made blue sockets darker than green sockets, and red sockets brighter than either blue or green.
