the d3d device has a non-zero reference count
I installed the game earlier today and after the patch update when I tried to run the game it displayed this error message along with two others. I've read a few forum post about this issue and still have not found a resolution. (other than buying a new computer)
here are my computers specs Operating System MS Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit SP1 CPU Intel Atom @ 1.66GHz 64 °C 45nm Technology RAM 2.00 GB Single-Channel DDR3 (5-5-5-12) Motherboard Dell Inc. Inspiron 1090 (CPU) 61 °C Graphics Generic PnP Monitor (1366x768@60Hz) Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 Not much I know but its what I have. Any suggestions would be very helpful. I really wanna play this game! |

I am afraid it just wont run on that PC.
Your memory is low, you CPU is not fast enough and the graphics card will not run this game. The only option you have is for a new PC. Sorry I know thats not what you wanted to hear. |

Time to build a new desktop then. It'll take me a couple months but to play this game its worth it.

I was going to say to look at upgrading the cpu... then I found out that your motherboard likely solders it to the board. So that is not likely an option... but path of exile is not a cpu intensive game so anything about a single core 3ghz or a dual core around what you have would work. Places like game debate actually place that atom cpu at well above what this game needs. The only real need for this game (hardware powerwise) is a good gpu more then anything else...
The ram is fine as well, with the game needing 1+gb on windows xp. The gpu is the problem and most games have major issues with intel video cards anyway. That direct 3d error happens because its trying to use shaders that the card does not support and it is the same error if I try to run the game on my motherboard's built in intel graphic hd chip instead of a dedicated video card. To be blunt, intel graphics chips are made of fail.... Pretty much the only thing between the systems listed here and being able to run the game are those intel graphics chips.... if replaced with gpus of worth then the game could run fine. But since almost no laptops have replaceable gpus... that means in the end this game still won't run on them at all. Build a desktop out of scrap parts from ebay/craigslist/etc and you can get a decent one for like 100.... for rusiru: Check that the motherboard's built in video chip is disabled and/or double check that the production_Config.ini lists the proper card under display in the line adapter_name. If its trying to use the motherboard's built in intel chip it very well could be giving this issue for you. Can't hurt to do a clean reinstall of the driver and directx if that fails to fix it though. The game allows for the it to be displayed by one card but essentially run by another card using the adapter_name in that config file. for jscar2000: My laptop has the same chip and can run the game without the error, so maybe a reinstall of directx and the drivers and maybe tweak the config.ini to set it to low settings can help BUT...... it will be a unplayable mess of 2-11 fps at most. Since I can run it with the same specs as you pretty much (only difference is I'm on a 32bit OS) that means something else is going on. It might be able to run but it will be a miserable experience and in the new gardens and beyond or more then solo completely unplayable. I had a grand total of 0.000001 fps on crematorium piety with my laptop and it has the same video chipset you do. Last edited by Jiero#2499 on Nov 17, 2013, 10:15:57 PM

Jiero,
Thanks for the information. I had a feeling the GPU was the issue. I have a desktop I haven't used in while with similar specs to the laptop. Would an Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS graphics card work? |

" Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® 7800 GT or ATI Radeon™ X1950 Pro or better according to that, it SHOULD... but I wouldn't expect it to be awesome. That's pretty low-end. |
