Diminishing Returns-Final view, final post

I've gotten two characters to level 58 and I would have to say I agree with OP, after level 50 the game just wasn't as fun. The overall game just doesn't feel rewarding anymore, you put considerable effort into leveling but those level ups feel kinda useless.

The next thing is getting skill gems and supports, this could turn into a nightmare because of random drops, I've been playing since may and I've only found maybe half the skill gems.

Sure you can trade for them but what am I supposed to trade? I've found one GCP in 200 hours of gameplay and that seems to be the standard currency for trades.

So I'm with OP, the game really just loses a lot of fun at later levels, especially past level 50

I think the real problem isn't so much the existence of a diminishing return. I think it's the timing.

I've felt this bump on one build that I was trying out, which suddenly just stopped feeling powerful at all to the point where I couldn't be bothered playing it anymore. But my other characters got past that bump pretty easily.

The bump is unavoidable. But the timing of it is crucial. It shouldn't happen when you just start doing Merciless A2, like it does right now. That bump should be when endgame starts. You SHOULD suddenly feel a lot less powerful once you start doing maps, because at that point it won't feel like you're not growing as hard as the content is, but as an arbitrary design to make the content more challenging.

So basically, nerf act 2 Merciless a little.
what about skill jump rewards, every 10 levels you increase you get a bonus unlinked passive point?

I do agree with MaxtheLimit to a certain extent. The reward of a passive skill point becomes so low in higher lvls compared to the amount of time u put in them, that it could be discouraging...I also see a lack of rewarding "final skill achievement" in the skilltree, that makes me truely want to go "the distance".

It depends on your build. If you plan it well it is not as bad. Things like additional block chance never diminishes, also 8% more life gives more total life at lvl 70 then at lvl 5 or 35.

In normal you should be going attack skills first and defense after and all the defensive nodes you take in late game, you will feel the difference more then if you took offensive nodes then.

In Hardcore you take offense/defense mixed with more defense and you are rewarded with getting to late game :)
That should be enough, then you work little by little on offense.

yeah, planning is important, but what I mean is that there is nothing much to be really looking forward to after let's say lvl 70 cuz u planned it all until that lvl (usually) and what comes later on are just minor bonuses. There is no feeling like "wow, if I keep going I will reach that final skill that will give me this and that".....I miss that feeling a bit :-)

No kidding, you've already beaten pretty much all the content the game has to offer by level 70.

I don't see any reason to keep going past ~65 unless you're on a mission to see the last few maps or just really attached to that one character.

If you've really played for 200 hours, you should be swimming in all sorts of valuables. Quality gems, uniques, and oodles and oodles of alterations, chromatics, etc. All of that adds up to several stacks of gcp... your wealth isn't solely how many exalt/gcp you've personally seen drop.

Agreed, it could be pushed out a bit by weakening a2 merciless and bringing maps a little closer. I don't expect GGG to make any changes until they introduce a3 though, as that's the best time to move area levels around and even out the progression bumps.
So I just hit lev 58 today and was 3 quarters way to lev 59 .Act 1 Merciless was a cake walk no deaths, then once I started the Act 2 quests I recieved a huge reality /gear check when my witch died 3 times on the way to a certain waypoint losing nearly 75% of my lev 58 xp . I understand there is diminishing returns and penaltys when you die but this seems a bit drastic. You should not lose over half of your fn xp bar for 3 deaths lol. Is this the defining mechanic of this game in which makes players want to keep playing after lev 58 ish? So far my Poe experiance has been epic but this xp penalty need to be nerfed a bit IMO
Ok so for anybody who reads this and cares I found out In order for normal geared lev 58 ish characters to be able to excel in Act 2 Merciless it is probabaly best to stay in Act 1 Merc and Just grind xp untill around 61 or 62 then procede on to Act 2. You will also of course gain a few gear upgrades in the grind process .So instead of just getting gear checked the second you hit act 2 and getting face raped loosing xp everytime you die just bite the bullet and get on the enemies level. At least you will be on the same lev as enemie mobs you are encountering in the fields of combat! If your lev 58 and have godly gear allready then disreguard this post! thx

Hahahaha just saw this and yeah, I totally had HUNDREDS of alterations at that point, didn't even know what to do with them since I was still playing only solo.

I think that combining this with losing experience when you die can make the game pretty frustrating for me now that I have gotten to the second difficulty level.

I am a very casual player and probably much older than your normal player at 51 so I doubt trying to make changes for myself would help much.

I know I dislike playing in the casual(default) group and still losing experience when I die is pretty frustrating. I do not usually spend a ton of time reading about skill trees. I like to experiment with them myself although the game really does not allow this function in any mode.

So you start dying and you go back to grind levels to get some more points to get some survival passives from the tree then later realize you can not kill things fast enough later. I do not trade so unless gear drops for me I reach a place where I can simply not progress.

I wonder if a baddy mode that is even lower than default would work that would remove all penalties from dying and allow you to be able to change skill trees more easily.

The game can be fun and I guess the good thing is that it is free. I would consider spending money for some more room in my storage or maybe cosmetic things but since I am not sure I can get much further the money would likely be wasted.

Best advice I can give you, is to role a character after a guide - I know pretty lame but once you've "beat" the game with said character you will have a lot of skill gems available for experimentation and more easy access to items that might give your own build the push to succeed.
