Is there a trick to leveling up gems faster?

I see people with level 70-something characters using level 20 gems all the time, but at level 83 my gems are all still at level 18 or 19. I just leveled a witch to level 70, and her spark gem (taken from Hillock quest reward in normal and used ever since) is only level 16.

Is there something I'm missing as far as leveling up my gems to 20?

you can buy lvled gems or use those from previous builds??

Dont level them all at once.

I have noticed high level players join lower level parties to level up gems faster... Some of the players where polite and asked me if they could join my party to level their gems. They where players level 80+

i think that if you are a higher level then the rest of the party you get more experience overall. Now you might still get the higher level penalty to the experience that you get but gems don't, so the end result is you leech experience off the party (which is somewhat wasted on you) but you fuel your gems

I could be wrong but I think gems are not affected by experience penalty, as characters do.

I leveled one character almost purely from docks runs (where you get penalty quite early) since when I reached the zone, and gems hit 20 when i was around mid 70s/early 80s. I'm 83 now and I almost got to 20 a Q gem i dropped in docks, so it must have been not more than 10 levels ago.

With other characters (running maps, so more experience to the character) progression on gems felt "slower" in comparison to character progression.

So my feeling is that gems don't get reduced experience penalty from character level.
