anti bot idea for the new trade system
|
The problem is wild, we saw it in poe 2 and now its here in poe 1, Im legit impressed you didnt even try to fix it before bringing it to poe 1.
Solution: Add a CAPTCHA or like a simple math quiz like 2+2 and we need to type the answer, only and only when you try to buy an item that was posted in the last 60 seconds. Last bumped on Nov 8, 2025, 12:55:47 PM

Ah yes, CAPTCHA. Famous for having no weaknesses...
Don't get me wrong, CAPTCHA is useful to prevent bots from spamming forms or creating fake accounts. On the PoE forums they help protect against bots scraping data from player profiles. However, the test is quite limited and has downsides to it as well. 1) advanced bots use machine learning and OCR and bypass it 2) meanwhile, user experience suffers especially for people with disabilities raising questions about accessibility It is much better to use more modern protection strategies such as - rate limiting per IP - analysing user activity (is there a pattern of behaviour that is unusual?) - invisible CAPTCHA (background check without interaction) It's not like you add CAPTCHA and bots can no longer use the features. It'd be more of a bandaid fix to the detriment of all the legitimate players The opposite of knowledge is not illiteracy, but the illusion of knowledge.

Yeah your idea actually sounds way better, Im not an expert in this things so I guess my idea was a bit noob. However, all I know is we need something that helps us with this issue. This trade system was a quality of life for everyone, but the one that are getting the most profit from it are the RMT's

Orrr... and I know this is going to be a shocking suggestion /s. Remove direct player to player trading and make the market 110% anonymous. Many birds one stone. Account stealing for the purpose of siphoning off the valuable assets to be sold on RMT sites would be severely limited. Currency farmers that funnel down to the accounts that are used to transfer to a specific identified IRL person that purchased the currency with real $$ would be almost 99.999% eliminated. An anonymous services market could be setup with the same features as the async market. Unless you can verify someone trading you a carry is actually a human and not a bot being run on the server as a GG experiment, how would you know, and why would it even matter? As a reminder that is not air your toon is breathing.

" Your idea is interesting. What if players meet on maps and throw things on the floor? |
|
" In fact, I don't think there's a need to fight RMT. Because RMT, to some extent, helps players who can't or don't want to play for long periods of time to experience certain content. For example, you want to kill an uber-uber Ancient, but you don't have the time or desire to play and save up for a strong build to do it. But you can go to work and simply buy a strong build or the currency for a strong build from another player. We've all probably seen GGG's posts about streamers who, without putting in much effort, which no other player could, get mirrors and expensive items. Beyond these people, there are thousands of others who spend more time and effort and don't get the same, or even less. The most important resource in PoE is time. We buy chest tabs to save time; it's the same RMT. It's just that in the case of players, those who sell their services for real money spend their time farming, while those who use their services spend their time working. We trade our time with each other. I believe that to finally destroy RMT and GGG, we simply need to ensure that everyone is swimming in loot and not wasting time on boring farming. If everyone gets valuable loot, then everyone will be equal. But then, according to GGG's logic, players will quickly achieve what they want and stop playing. In that case, they need to come up with content that goes beyond completing all maps and killing all bosses |

"That would still be player to player if the item did not drop in a map they where both in when the item dropped. This kind of distinction is trivially allowed or disallowed in just about every modern ARPG with server side saves and multiplayer. Last edited by ExsiliumUltra#5541 on Nov 7, 2025, 10:41:02 PM

" You can't "destroy rmt" as long as there are people willing to pay real money for virtual items in a videogame. The leagues are also so long that being busy irl is a bad excuse. |
