With an upvote/downvote system in place for bug reports you can see what people are most unhappy with and might better help prioritize issues that need resolving.

There's been numerous times I've come to report a bug and noticed there were already several similar or identical ones, but wouldn't have found them since they were older and buried by newer reports. Some of those newer reports weren't even actual bugs, yet they pushed actual bugs down the list and reduced their visibility.
