treasure goblins / rescue-able NPC's
I haven't seen this mentioned before and before i start, I realize this is a direct rip off from 'that other game' but it is a very popular feature.
(this is a copy/paste from the wiki) " ok so how about this idea... A scout or robber that behaves in a similar manner to D3's loot goblins and if the player cannot catch them in time then they disappear into the undergrowth/shadows and a slightly different idea, How about a random chance of a "rescue" encounter, eg some times when the map generates, there is a small chance of a character beset by monsters (a merchant, farmer or fellow outcast) that you need to get to and "save" before the monsters kill them. They could reward you with an orb or something. It would be hard to make it so you have a reasonable time to get to them because the monsters can kill characters pretty quick. maybe the rescue-able NPC could be invulnerable or invisible to the monsters until the player gets within a certain range. basically its 2 ideas that add a certain risk vs reward factor for deciding whether or not to madly charge after something and risk pulling to many adds. thoughts? :: sƃuıɥʇ ɟo ʎɔuɐʇsuoɔ ǝɥʇ ɟo ʎʇılɐǝɹ lɐuıɟ ǝɥʇ ǝq plnoʍ sıɥʇ ʎɐʍɐ ʇǝƃ plnoɔ ƃuıɥʇou ʇɐɥʇ os plɹoʍ ǝɥʇ uı plɹoʍ ǝɥʇ ǝpıɥ oʇ ǝɹǝʍ noʎ ɟı ʇnq :: Last edited by DasRoach#6897 on Jun 29, 2012, 6:26:33 AM

No treasure goblins, please... =>[.]<=
I have often wished that we might be able to prevent some of those fresh corpses we find out in the world. That's an idea I can get behind. =^[.]^= =^[.]^= basic (happy/amused) cheetahmoticon: Whiskers/eye/tear-streak/nose/tear-streak/eye/

"Oh you mean the completely unoriginal idea as evolved from Golden Axe and Gauntlet to Dungeon Siege 2 and countless other action games and rpgs? No thanks. If it were more than just a walking treasure chest, perhaps. I'm quite tired of the idea to be honest. At least in Dungeon Siege 2 it was somewhat challenging to catch and kill the buggers and at least they stole your loot. Not just some empty distraction. God I loved Golden Axe
"the premier Action RPG for hardcore gamers."

"To be fair, this is very much a genre game; its foundation consists entirely of unoriginal ideas. :P But yeah, I don't think these would work so simply. At this point I think adding "rescue" encounters and the like is going to be an uphill battle in terms of making them varied and meaningful enough to not just feel like human-skinned treasure chests. And the treasure goblins, well, they are just treasure chests. I thought they were a missed opportunity in D3; would have liked if you had to choose between killing the goblin for its loot, or entering the portal yourself without knowing where it leads (like those phase demons or whatever, in Torchlight). |

Golden axe was the best. Until anything else came out. I still remember it fondly, even though it was perhaps not as cool as I wanted it to be..

After being felt cheated by TOG, these TOG numbskulls (really, these people just piss me off) have the absolute gall to try to turn POE into the game they themselves rejected?
POE is a constantly evolving game, so expect balance changes, buffs and nerfs STILL!

Not quite so Mr Rat, and its simply a case of seeing what works and if its potentially applicable to PoE. I have read quite a few reviews on TOG and I was most interested in what (generally) the reviewers listed as things they got right or did well. (I don't need help to see what they got so, so wrong)
Bear in mind of course that there are very few original ideas, generally most things are all 'variations on a theme' and just because subject X uses something then you should not automatically assume that it would not be useful to subject Y. P.S Golden axe was so awesome =) here's a walk-through to easily beat the game: 1) choose the dwarf 2) press jump 3) press attack 4) repeat steps 2 and 3 until screen cleared 5) move right 6) return to step 2 I will say however, don't let your rose tinted glasses convince you to play the game again as it has (sadly) not aged well =( If you have an Xpox then for a similar themed but updated style of game play, check out "Castle Crashers" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsLHvg93bX4 Its good for some nostalgic mindless fun =) :: sƃuıɥʇ ɟo ʎɔuɐʇsuoɔ ǝɥʇ ɟo ʎʇılɐǝɹ lɐuıɟ ǝɥʇ ǝq plnoʍ sıɥʇ ʎɐʍɐ ʇǝƃ plnoɔ ƃuıɥʇou ʇɐɥʇ os plɹoʍ ǝɥʇ uı plɹoʍ ǝɥʇ ǝpıɥ oʇ ǝɹǝʍ noʎ ɟı ʇnq :: Last edited by DasRoach#6897 on Jun 30, 2012, 3:06:27 AM

Treasure goblins no, but maybe trapped chests? That might be cool.

"Oh, indeed. I said it that way because the op said he was ripping off 'that other game' and that other game totally got its inspiration from its predecessors in this genre. The difference being that most games take the idea and put a neat twist on it. D3 seems to have included the treasure gonlin for the sake of just having it. PoE already has walking treasure chests with mobs 'of wealth'. To me, thats much morr rewarding and challenging, but .maube not as interesting than a lityle dude who does nothing but disappear after a short time. If GGG wants to make their own twist on the goblin, that's cool, but I definotely don't want something like d3's version. P.s. sorry for my spelling, typing on a phone isn't easy sometimes. |
