The name of a gem is not an in depth description of what it does. It is not the wording that describers the effect. It's just a name that conveys the general effect. The actual wording of the effect is displayed on the gem when looking at the stats it provides, and clearly applies only to attacks.
How about "X% Increased Physical Damage"? If you compare to "X% Increased Spell Damage", they both say the same, but have different meanings. Not very consistent... and, for example with EK/Bear Trap/Shockwave Totem, misleading.
EK actually works with spell damage but you do have a point.
Shockwave totem and bear trap should get a boost by spell damage by any applicable logic. But they're physical, someone will say - so are EK and detonate. But they're totam/trap, again someone objects - but spell damage works with flame totem and fire trap. So? Are they spells? Well, cast speed, spell crit and other spell bonuses work but spell damage doesnt. Now really?
Jeez, just rebalance their damage and make them full spells or remove any spell association from them.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

it's the mechanics that decide it and yes it is confusing;
bear trap is a physical damage skill. The "spell" part is the root, not the data or trap.
Shockwave totem is a physical damage skill. The "spell" part is the knockback, not the damage.
For EK and detonate dead, there is not secondary effect and thus the damage is spell damage.
But agreed, it doesnt make sense the way it is now.
If shockwave and bear trap are not intended to be used as spells then make then physical skills.
Traps should be defined by the denominator "trap", if it's boostable by spell damage it should also have "spell". The physical parts do not need to be mentioned because x% physical damage applies to all physical damage. In case of EK, as a spell it is still physical damage, so both apply.

Confusing, I tell you. Perhaps not to those that invested time in studying game mechanics but to new players surely, how can they plan their build if they have no idea if it will work.
Shockwave totem is especially bad, I know that happens because the damage it deals isn't of 'spell' type but the shockwave technically IS a spell so cast speed affects it, but spell damage doesn't. It just creates unnecessary confusion, not to mention the data on char sheet and dps portion on the action bar tooltip isn't correct.

So certain skills can have multiple tags like 'physical' or 'spell'. Maybe it's because I'm used to it but if you think about those damage and attack types as tags it becomes pretty clear pretty quickly.
Now you tell me shockwave is not affected by spell damage. WTF! Confusing. Should be affected by spell damage. Must be. It's a spell, after all. Have you tried it? I must try it. My world fell apart.
Edit: I'm dying. Farewell.
