Beastracfting: Split an Item Into Two - how does it work?

How does "Split an Item Into Two" exactly work?

For example, I have a rare 6-linked armour with 100 life and 20 mana.

Is the result

a) I have two armours, one with 100 life, the other one with 20 mana?

b) I keep one of the armours with just one of the mods, arbitrarily chosen, the rest is lost?

If it is a) do the two items keep their sockets and links? Is there any other kind of risk if you use this method?

works just like you said in A.
sockets, links, colors, basetype are all kept the same. mods are split between the 2 items.

doesnt work on elder/shaper bases (or the new influence types i would assume)

Thank you very much. That sounds awesome. I should have had to think about beastcrafting a couple of hours before, when I made this armour and did not dare to use another Orb of Annulment to get rid of the mana...
